Oh dear, I've got that itch again too. Reactivated and will be logging in sometime tonight to see what has changed. Would love to join if you guys are still around.
Likely will be starting a new character. I barely remember any of the story I completely ignored because it was just a race to complete content to get to other content. Looking forward to a different experience this time around, and just some noodling around waiting for the xpac.

On the topic of Black Mage in XIV:
They summon fireballs and fart lightning. From their eyes.
Even thinking about them makes enemies explode.
Having one in your PT is like a free ticket to defeat Absolute Virtue.
That's the reason why only one of them is allowed in PvP. Per server.
Imagine a cross-breed between Allakhazam and Sun Zu. That's a Black Mages's toenail.

Going through 10+ hours of updates currently after two days of trying to get my account activated. I can't wait to start up again. Definately with my experience of pushing level cap and rushing the game from 2004 to 2012, I'd like to focus on enjoying the game more than anything this time around. Seriously, this game is all about friends and grouping up with people to experience a game like no other. It's 2013 and no online game I've tried, free to play or pay to play compares to FFXI. Only game that comes close is FFXIV.
I'd love a LS to start up with and have some fun meeting people and doing stuff with. Want to do it right this time. I miss a lot of people I used to play with. You don't notice how much fun it was till it's long gone. The best stuff in this game is the events, helping out friends and meeting new people from around the world, literally. What other game offers that with auto-translate function? None. So many great things about FFXI that makes it my favorite game of all time.
If you come across a Mithra named Ereseya on the game and don't mind handing out a pearl to your LS, hook me up, please. ^^
