Thoughts: Server Wide Linkshell?Follow

Not sure exactly how I'm going to explain this...

Imagine if you could talk to every player online at once, like a giant, server-wide chat channel. Has anyone ever kicked this idea around? A linkshell that EVERYONE has?

I know there's a lot of problems/drama that could arise from this, but think about it... instead of standing in AhtUrghan and shouting for help for something, you could jump into the world shell and ask 1000+ppl, no matter where in the world they are.

The game is really designed for all of us to be working together, yet we've never (to my knowledge) had a Linkshell designed for this kind of purpose.

Could it work? Thoughts?

Here's what you have to consider here.

1.) How many people will hang out in this shell on a regular basis, compared to their respective social shells?

2.) How many people already filter out shouts because they get annoying?

3.) It would probably cause immense amounts of lag to "broadcast chat" to every single player in the game.

How many people have active enough social shells that they never, ever, need to leave? Not everybody can get help/talk/whatever they need whenever they need it.

/blist someone who annoys you, just like /shout.

But if everyone was in the shell, then it would be the only chat streaming to anyone, anywhere? How many conversations are going on at the same time, server wide? it's still just as much data streaming to players, isn't it?

Besides, it wouldn't be a full time shell. Get a exp party? switch it off. Get that group together for your Mission? switch it off. The concept is more for the communication tool to help get people together.

It's kind of like Dynamis really, after a run, when there is still a large amount of players on, multiple smaller groups usually spring up out of it, for things like exp and missions.

Kind of on the same topic, but..

I played this cheesy MMO, which my ex still plays called Scions of Fate.

It's a grind game with no real point, just anime style graphics and blah gameplay.

Point of the matter is, they have a 'house' system similar to guilds, or linkshells. Which would be the equivalent to all your gathering needs.. The one thing they devised was something called a 'Lions Roar'

It's a server wide system to 'talk' to everyone that is currently logged into the game. What if there was a way to channel/filter certain text in-game to allow people that are looking/interested in XP/merit parties, missions, questing, help, adventuring to swap to that channel and gain access to people that are similarly looking for certain aspects of the game.

Lord of the Rings Online has it in their gameplay.

Click a tab and you're in the 'looking for fellowship' chat.

etc, etc.

Theres only a certain amount of users aloud per linkshell. To do something like this you would have to have everyone get Teamspeak or another such program.

its theoretically possible. the server sends out messages to all players whenever maintenance is scheduled. The problem with it is, i'm not 100% sure how the servers are laid out, but given the computational difficulty it would take to implement all the AI in the game, the only way the servers could possibly be setup is in a cluster.

This means that as soon as one server receives the message to be sent, it has to send it to all other machines in the cluster. this can be implemented using the subnet's broadcast address, but all this would probably increase internal traffic, making it take longer to zone, possibly hindering quests, and, indeed, increasing lag.

In Summary, it's a good idea in concept, but would NOT be good to implement. Teamspeak or a large IRC channel would be a better idea.

i think you kinda summed it all up..

i think in-game channels to switch to when you need or want something specific in-game would be an awesome addition still.

That's another good point... the pc, PS2 and 360 all have functional voice chat... but there's no standard voice chat in FFXI.

the ps2 has functional voice chat?

you gotta remember that the game was originally developed for the PS2 back around 2000.

7 years ago did the ps2 have voice chat regularly?

As far as function goes now, yea. It should definitely be inevitable for them to introduce SOMETHING. The way I see it though is that they're continously just trying to add new content in hopes they can achieve stability among subscribers.

Hopefully sometime soon they'll introduct something.

Good point... and the only game that comes to mind that it works well in is the Socom series... but that does prove that it CAN be done... too bad it never will be.

It would be alright, so long as said "world" LS channel isn't on all the time. Otherwise it'd be like carrying around a radio with no off switch tapping into Whitegate shoutspam 24/7. I think that would drive me batty.

Given that I only log onto FF for the use of an IM/chat program with graphics, I'm all in favor of more places to talk in.
