Attempting to start an RP LS (long-ish post)Follow

Hello, Caitsith. In-game I'm known as Shishamu. Perhaps you know me and perhaps you don't. Those of you who do know me can probably attest to the idea that I'm austere, aloof, and something of an enigma. I'm probably the only person on this server who has been playing since the NA PS2 launch and yet still hasn't dinged 75 on a single job. Why? Because my interest in the exp grind is far outstripped by my interest in the world of Vana'diel itself. To put it bluntly, I'm in it for the story more than I am for the battles.

Yes, I'm a roleplayer, and the only one I've ever met on FFXI, much to my dismay. I know others must exist and yet I've never been able to find them. So my latest project (and the main reason I am returning to FFXI after such a lengthy absence) is to try and start...a movement, of sorts. It's not difficult to notice that FFXI is slowly fading from prominence as SE's new MMO gets further along in development, and so my hope is that people will be interested in prolonging the game's life and value by creating our own ways to keep it fun.

My preferred method of keeping the game interesting is to invest myself in this world and the characters in it. Vana'diel is an expansive place with a very detailed history, and it seems like a waste not to make better use of the world we've been given to play with.

So, what am I getting at? An organized movement. The obvious incarnation of this is a linkshell devoted entirely to this purpose. A network to connect the handful of roleplayers that must surely already exist, and also to hopefully create an interest in RP for those who haven't considered it. My intention is for this to be a very casual sort of thing, with each and every player deciding the level of his or her involvement. RP is flexible. It can be as simple as merely feigning hostility towards the members of rival nations, if you so desire. Or it can be as complex as lengthy backstories, fully-realized character personalities, and plot and development arcs, if that is your fancy.

My intention is to build an avenue for RP and eventually provide a database of relevant information: plot summaries, nation histories, guides, etc. Ultimately my goal is to make RP convenient for everyone involved, regardless of their acting, writing, or game experience. Everyone should be permitted to participate.

If you are interested in helping me to realize this project, you can reply here, or message me (Shishamu) or my second-in-command (Neromo) in-game. I eagerly await your responses. Thank you for your time.

Well, greetings, as the leader of an RP LS here on Caitsith I can tell you its a bit of an uphill climb you have ahead of you.

I'm interested in your idea of networking the pools of people who do already RP in a meaningful way. Please contact me in Vana'diel so we may discuss.

Then it's a surprise to both of us that the other person exists. I thought that was MY claim to fame! (Although for the record, I started very shortly after the NA PC release, before you PS2ers arrived. =P )

I do like your idea though. As much as I don't need yet another linkshell, I think I'll look you up in game.

Heh. In my defense, I did "quit" for a while.

So they do exist!

The basic idea was that it would be easier to get people interested in RP if it was more convenient to get involved in it. There are very useful resources that exist (the History of Vana'diel site and the detailed timelines on the Blue Gartr forums are extremely helpful), but they are few and far between, you know? In order to get the information a roleplayer would need to know, you have to hunt all through the dark corners of the universe. Which is quite daunting in itself, not even accounting for the fact that RP is a lot of work in addition to that research.

Essentially what I want to do is compile the detailed, useful information that people who have been invested in this story for a long time all know, and put it together in a format that is more convenient for someone who is relatively new to Vana'diel or just generally hasn't given the story and locations much thought. A good example of this is the nation descriptions up on the POL site that pretty much everybody sees: it's common knowledge that San d'Oria is a proud kingdom in a state of decline, but it's less commonly known that the attitude of San d'Oria is pretty much all a response to the Second Battle of Konchstat. Something like that is extremely useful for somebody who is roleplaying as a proud San d'Orian, and yet it takes a lot of digging to really find anything about it. Having information like that readily accessible would make RP far less daunting.

Putting this information together in an easily accessible and user-friendly way would, hopefully, get people interested in RPing. Also, if the "unitiated" can look at the RPers of Vana'diel and see that they are organized and plentiful, they'll hopefully be more encouraged to participate.

Plus, having access to such information and fellow RPers could be immensely helpful for people who already RP. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go back and revise my character's biography and personality to account for new things I've learned as a result of poking about the dark, shadowy internet. And, as any RPer knows, RP is most satisfying with an audience; the unfortunate truth is that the proper audience is pretty hard to find in Vana'diel. But bring everyone together, and they're all easier to find. In theory.

Thank you both for your responses! In-game I'm usually on after 9 PM Pacific Time if you want to discuss.

Allakhazam DOES have a wiki, just for this sort of thing, as well as the hard numbers the non-RP'ers want.
The staff could ALWAYS use a hand filling in the blanks, adding pages that a couple of over-worked staff members (like my wife...) just don't have time to do.

Most of the people who 'roleplay' in an MMO are in very small, insular groups that only last as long as they mesh together. Nessus is the only person I know, across all servers who's kept her group going, and I have no idea how many members they've got now, or how often they gain/lose people.
There's a reason for it, it's hard as **** for roleplayers to shift their minds around not having control over what they can accomplish.
A tabletop group playing a game set in Vana'diel, could kick Kam'lanaut out on his ear, or actually kill him off, and rule Jeuno. In FFXI that can't and won't ever happen.

When I started back in beta, I rp'd my character, I was insistent that I'd get THF to 75 and be renowned as a 'master thief', and suffered the two great setbacks to RP'ing in this mmo.
1) When a sizeable chunk of your fellow players don't speak your language, that's a problem.
2) When the chunk of playerbase that does speak your language does stuff with you, most of the time they want to talk about what was on tv last night, or how much xp/hr they're getting, they don't care that you're the 'terror of the goblin nation'.

Wow. I didn't even see that there was a wiki. I haven't been on Allakhazam in quite some time, so I'm a little ignorant of the newer features.

That's actually pretty much exactly what I had in mind. Now I feel really silly.
