Problem with newb?Follow

Ok, well, there is this person, that recently joined my linkshell, and is new (like, 2 days new). Now I'm not going against the newbs (I know I was one for the looonggest time ^^;)
but, this person does NOT pay attention.

He asks how to make gil and everything, which I'm fine with, I tell him to sell his drops. But the thing that gets to me is, he is constantly asking the same question, over and over again.

I have told him to buy the strategy guide numerous times, but he says, "I'm poor!" and I know that's not true, but maybe he's just lazy.

My real question is, what can I do to get him to actually, well, listen? I have had to explain how to use the Auction House about 6 times now, and he still asks me how to use it!

It's not like I'm skipping on stuff either ex. "Buy stuff from it." I actually explain the concept and whatnot.

Please, for the love of my sanity (the little that is there) tell me how I can either explain everything, so he doesn't ask again, or how I can well...get him to pay attention! ^^;

I know this is the dumbest thread ever, so please don't rate down, but if you ever see a person named, "Pointy" and feel like taking him off my hands for a little, please, feel free.

/tell Killercraig or just post here. Thanks a million in advance!

speaking as a relative newb (been on 2 weeks on the 30th ^^) i found the AH daunting at first, i knew it was the best way to make money to start with.. but working it out was tricky...

my higher lvl friends took me to it, told me how to target the counter (total newb at this point, i'd been on about 4 hours!) and told me to explore, then logged off ^^ a little harsh, but it left me without anyone to turn to, so i had to work it out myself, and i've not pestered them about using the AH again!

dunno if that'll work with your guy, but being given the basics and left to sink or swim has helped me out more that anything else!!

Do you know how old that player is? He may be too young for this game. If he can not grasp the concepts of buying and selling, then he is not quite ready yet.

Assuming he is a young kid....
Try to tell him again to buy the Strategy Guide and go over it with his parents.

Or ask him to ask his teachers/parents what buying and selling means.

Or ask him if he has friends who also play the game and to ask them for help.

Good luck!

Well, I don't know if he qualifies as "young", because he's 15, as am I, but I just basically explored, but he doesn't even understand the basic concept! I'm so lost on him, and hopefully work with him tomorrow.

I'll talk to him about it in school...boy...that kid can talk!

French Class:
<Pointy> craig...whats better than blah blah blah
<Craig> be quiet man! we gotta pay attention!
<Teacher> STOP CHIT CHATTING!

Boy, who knew this game could cause trouble in school lol

i work with erestor, firi and lowako, and they've all had the game for months, almost a year in firi's case.. and they never shut up about it!!!

admittedly now i'm on i do talk about it a fair bit, but i try to talk about other things in my life, like my music and my websites.. but still... this game does kinda take over!!!

sound like your friend wants someone to walk him thru every single aspect of the game, show him everything he needs to do, basically scamming your personal experiance of the game so he can get thru it easier.. but thats no way to play! why do what everyone else is doing in a non-linear game like this? part of the point is to learn and do your own thing ^^

here's something that you might not or might know...people learn in different ways...telling may not be enough even going through it may not be enough sometimes you need a physical representation or a diagram ... so since you know him irl it's a good thing in that you can more than just explain...sit down and show him with diagrams just what happens in the AH and all like that.

show him the steps from where the money goes how to buy something and all like that on a peice of paper. After all the "Auction House" is a bit misleading at that..they should call it the "Market".

The only reason i learn things quickly is because i become so entrenched and do lots of research...but it's ok cuz it helps me with my focused upon career path, rather than **** me up.

As for in school...if he asks during a lecture, start speaking to him in french, if he wants to get info from you he will have to learn it and if you want to keep ahead of him you will too. It will please you, your teacher and your parents amd will probably help this kid to learn.

Just some ideas.

That's why, aside from letting my 8 yr old kill bees and such (when I was in Cerberus farming bee hive chips before I moved here) I won't give him his own character yet.

Hes not old enough to understand the concepts of this game cause its way different from the other final fantasy games hes played. Plus, nothing to anyone here, everyone I've encountered here on the board and on the server, so far, have been nice. But I've seen things on Cerberus of people yelling at others and swearing at them, and thats not an atmosphere I want him exposed to.

Back on subject, even though he claims hes 15 he could be younger or maybe he just doesn't "get it".

Hi Lady Wenchy,
I like the killing bees part with your 8-year old! So far, my gf's 5-year old son only gets to drive. And only on South Gust. And it's an interesting experience for him....press 8, now 8 and 4, ok...now 6, then 8 and 6!!! Also...ok, now that we "beat" one of the three quadavs chasing us, how many are left???

But I digress....

KillerCraig,
Durakken brings up a good point with regards to doing research first. It really helps a lot with this game. For instance, instead of dying three times trying to force my way from Jeuno through Suromongue to get to Windy, I could have just taken the boat from Selbina.

Anyway, it might be a good idea to throw your "apprentice" into this web site and have him do his own digging. If he is too lazy to do that and if he does not want to try things in-game on his own, then I do not think that anyone can help him out.

Even though I have not played any other MMORPG before, this game does take its toll with all the research a serious player needs to get the most out of the experience.

Good luck!
Tynie
