The notification system fires off very early in the process, before the post you are following is loaded on a page. That part won't be changing. The only possible way to suppresss that notification would be to look at the URL and assume that it loaded. That's bad for people with less reliable connections, people hitting the back button, etc. Other ways of doing it run into the problem of more overhead on every single page load which is definitely undesirable.
