The S word.Follow

#1 Jan 22 2011 at 3:33 PM Rating: Good
What is the official stance on the S word in images? This was discussed a few years ago, and the awjeez.jpg meme was cleared with the caveat that it not be thrown around in the gaming forums. Since we are told to stick with a PG 13 standard, using the S word in an image, not in the context of defecating, or referring to *****, should be kosher.

Should awjeez.jpg be considered a solitary exception to the rule, or can we read it as the basis as some sort of precedence? If it's a grey area, are there any guidelines?

Images follow the forum filter convention. So "Sh*t" with the "I" removed is acceptable. the full word isn't. Usually unless they get reported we ignore that particular word. if it is reported the image would be removed.

I wondered why my Picard picture got deleted. Then I remembered that even though it was the Asylum, the images are viewable all over the site...

I'm confused. You nuked my post a few days ago for containing 'a-hole' in which I replaced a 's' with '$'.

A-hole and PG-13 is iffy, to be honest with you, chewz. I really think whoever nuked it, probably should have just edited it, but I can see why there was at least some reaction. Especially since the S word defaults to ****, which leaves little to the imagination, too.

No, I nuked it due to the word you used that preceded "ridiculous" You know, the one that started with the F...

Is there a reason why the s-word is merely asterisked when the f-word is completely scrambled?

I can think of a few filtered words in response to this, but I like my account. Smiley: clown

It has mainly to do with US telivision and movie guidelines. For some reason, over here, violence and excrement are not considered as offensive as swear words with a sexual connotation. I also don't think *** is censored.

We've talked about making adjustments over the years. For example, we should probably remove the filter entirely in Asylum. Other areas, such as the FFXI forums, would probably benifit from a more restrictive policy on some words to be honest.

Images as a whole, and avatars we are much more difficult on because images and avatars are not necessarily confined to one forum location.

But I replaced the "u" with "*" exactly the same way as you did in "Sh*t".

At least I think I did. That's how I usually deal with the F-word.

Yes. And **** is allowed, all variations of the F word are not, and doing so is considered an attempt to evade the profanity filter and thus nuked. if the word looks like this after you post !@#$% then don't post it, especially in the feedback forum of all places.

Which is acceptable for one word and not the other, hence why they have separate filters in the first place.

I get that the f-word can't be used, because using it more than four times in a product would require an R-rating (silly MPAA), but I fail to see the reason for the difference in method used for censoring.

Following are examples, so please don't nuke me:

I will @#%^ you up, son!

Holy sh*t!

I'm fairly certain that most people know what is supposed to be in place of the censored words in both cases, given the context. What I don't get is why the s-word is asterisked (and thus hardly censored at all) while the f-word is completely scrambled (and completely censored). Is it because the s-word isn't exactly forbidden and the asterisk is just there because it's not a nice word?

Seems like if both words are forbidden for the same reasons, they should be equally scrambled. Not that I'm advocating censoring. I come from a society where swear words are heavily embraced in all types of media. Smiley: lol

Just found it odd that there was such a big difference in the way the words were censored.

Here might be a better example of how silly the filter is:

1) What the ****?

2) I want someone to **** in my mouth.

Words, even the naughty ones, don't mean much without context.

Reminds me of the curse words episode of South Park, and the explanation of when it's ok to say ****.

I didn't think there were different dragons. Just the one dragon that was summoned once the words were said enough (any of them).

Edit:
If we keep this up, I'm sure Kao is going to lock the thread.

The best answer to that I can give is it's a U.S. cultural issue. The word **** is in the bible for one thing, and religious or not, that partcular book has had a rather large influence on U.S. culture. It's also just a word that we are more used to hearing in public I guess. Plus it's easier to explain to inquisitive 4 year olds if used accidentally I suppose. But basically our forum filters are in the configuration they are in largely because thats how they were set up back in the beginning on the UBB forums 11 years ago and it transitioned that way. And on those particular words I happen to agree with the filter in most cases. Children play MMO's. Children sometimes read the forums. I don't need pissed off e-mails from parents every time some kid runs across someone breaking the filter with one of those words that begin with F. I get enough of those as is.

This thread is very near a lock unless anyone else has any on topic questions.

And yet the rape dragon is entirely uncensored.

Because you can't stop the rape dragon.
