Browser is Firefox 3.6, OS is Windows XP, Windows 7, and Linux Ubuntu 10.10.

My posts per page setting is 100, but sometimes when I post a new post in a thread of 51-100 posts, it will redirect me to page 2 at 100 posts per page.

Doesn't happen if the thread is at 50 posts or less, or if the thread is at 101 posts or more.

Easily resolvable by just going to the address par and removing the "page=2" from the address.

Wondered if anyone else had this issue.

Works fine for me, on any posts per page setting.
#3 Dec 30 2010 at 6:35 PM Rating: Good
Yeah, it doesn't happen all the time; in fact, it's very infrequent. I'll try to take a screenshot next time it happens if I think of it.

Well I can't figure out what causes it. It always goes to the page you were on when you clicked the reply link (which is why it doesn't go to the right page when you're the first post on a new page), and i'm unable to find any exceptions.

I cannot duplicte on this end either. Are you by chance in one of the "odd" forums that have a different structure other than forum=#? like the final fantesy fjob=# ones?

Got it.

/fcluster/gotopost.pl links always point to howmany=50, so he'd be on page 2 from the link, so the reply links points to page2, but then after he replies it goes back to using 100 posts per page, and thus puts the thread back to a single page.

No, most of my posting is forum=152

That sounds like an accurate description of what's happening.

Interesting. That almost sounds like a rounding issue. Kao, if you could ticket in the near future, that would be awesome (I will likely forget and am in the middle of something).

99% sure it's what i posted before. Also, the link to post links also point to howmany=50 which would also cause it. No calculations are done (the reply links always point to the same page you're on), so it can't be a rounding issue.

Bah. I shouldn't answer posts on a head full of cold medication, heh. I'll look into it. the howmany=50 is based on (a) the URL or (b) your preferences. Potentially there's a (c) of a saved URL that lives in the post info, but that would be broken if it worked off the poster's howmany val/URL.

Actually the link to post detects the setting properly, however if your setting is different from howmany=x in the url, it gives priority to the setting specified in the url. It would only happen from an fcluster/gotopost.pl link, or if someone else posts a link with &howmany=50.

Yeah, if there are 51-100 posts in the thread, even though my setting is 100 posts per page, it will treat it like it's 50, in that it shows me on page 2 of 2, but I don't actually see any posts. e.g. it might say post 88, page 2 of 2, but no posts will be displayed at all.

Happens maybe once or twice a week; As I said, I can take a screenshot next time it happens. I'll have to hunt down some threads that have 51-99 posts and post in them to try to trigger it.

Just got it to work:

Screenshot

This is on Windows 7 x64 Pro, although as mentioned, the same issue also happens on Windows XP x32 Pro and Linux Ubuntu 10.10, all three using Firefox 3.6.

View is set to 100 posts per page, this happens when I post a reply; notice that it shows 54 posts, but displays as if I'm on page 2 of a 50 post per page view.

Do you happen to use live or followed threads a lot? The subject links in live use gotopost links. Other sources of it are breadcrumbs while posting, bookmarks, and uposts.html. fcluster/gotopost.pl links will definitely cause it, since they always point to &howmany=50, regardless of your current posts per page setting (example, you'll notice &howmany=50 in the url, as well as at the top your setting will say 50 posts per page, if you were to reply you'd be brought to page 4, since that's what page you were on when you clicked the reply link, even though there are only 2 pages @ 100 per page). I really can't imagine anything else causes it, since like i said, the reply links simply point to whatever page you were on when you clicked it, regardless of whether that page exists or not.

No, I don't use live or followed threads; I usually just click on the red -> following the subject title to go to the first unread post in a thread, read everything, then if I'm replying, hit reply, bash my face on the keyboard, hit post.

Usually?

How did you get to the thread you just posted?

Also, i should try that method of posting:

yu75i89754rr87i8i

Wel damn, that's much more intelligent than my usual posts.

Assuming I'm on the forum, I typically a thread one of two ways... Either I click on the thread's name (If I haven't read anything in the thread yet) or I click on the red arrow pointing to the right to skip to the first unread post if I have already read posts in it.

Other than that, I will click on my user name > Posts to go to http://ffxiv.zam.com/uposts.html which is one of the methods you mentioned. That, or I'll just leave a thread open in a tab and tab back and F5 if I'm actively following more than one thread at once, or while I'm doing other things. The last way would be if I'm posting in my journal, in which case I'll go to my name > Journal and the above paragraph applies.

Those are the five ways I would get to a thread. The one you mentioned, uposts, seems like it might be a factor. The other ways I don't know.

I assume that's how you got to the thread where it happened earlier?

The issue will always happen if you get to a thread with >50 posts with an /fcluster/gotopost.pl link. If it happens in any other case (not likely), then you'll need to describe exactly how it happened.

I can't remember whether I got to it with uposts, red arrow, or the thread title. I'll try to pay more attention to how I get there and make mental notes of it.

A couple posts later and you're right: If I get to a thread from uposts, it seems to do it every time. If I get to a thread from the "First unread post" arrow, it performs correctly.

So the problem is definitely caused by fcluster/gotopost.pl as you suggested.
