FFXIV Board and KarmaFollow

#1 Oct 26 2010 at 11:59 AM Rating: Default
The karma system isn't working as it should on this (the FFXIV) board. (Although some will argue it is.)

The general forum either needs to be properly moderated and trouble posters need to be dealt with.

It's getting out of hand that every single thread is devolved by some idiot coming in posting absolutely nothing to the conversation and them not getting sub-defaulted because the rest of the trolls/socks are right there to vote them up. The real kicker is they get that privliage after just a handful of trolling posts. "lolz, you all have ocd cause this game sucks, only someone with ocd could possible find it fun, lolz!!!!!111one" as a first post lands someone scholar status..

I know this is going to come across as whiny because I can't but I'm positive there are many more in the same boat I am. We have provided countless posts in aid of the community but still have yet to rise above whatever the default level is and is a load of ******** that the people who actually assist and provide actual information with data to back it are held at the whim of the trolls infesting the FFXIV boards.

That's it... I know no one likes to hear someone ***** about the karma system but it is clearly not working on that board. Maybe ratings for posts on that forum need weighted differently... I don't know your the ones being paid...

Actually, of all the boards we have here, thats one of the ones where it seems to be working fairly well. I'll admit, there is still potential for some users to get knocked sub scholar early, or to get abnormally high ratings early, But we do have some behind the scenes mechinisms in play these days to mitigate that. For the record, you cannot get scholar on your first post. You have to at least have 16, and I'd like to make that number 100 at a minimum. Thats still under discussion though.

With a new game, trolls and noobie posters are a fact of life for the first year. They will taper off with time The bottom line is to have an effective forum, you need a sustainable userbase, and the more users you start out with the more you end up with in the end. 90% of the people with posts on the front page of the FFXIV general forum won't be there in 3 years, historically speaking. Regular users are important to a forum, but those regulars have to understand that new posters are critical to keeping them interested in the forum long term. There is no way to tell early on how a poster will mature. We have people here with thousands of coherent, interesting posts who I was certain couldn't string more than half a thought together when they first started to post. We've had other posters who start out strong and then dissappear after a handful of posts, never to be seen again. The main difference in many cases is that they have people in the forum who interact with them and help them learn how to fit in better with the forum.

As to your latter complaint about people being knocked sub scholar unfairly, we have a mechanism for dealing with that too. One that I don't advertise generally, or even inform people of when it occurs, but we do have a karma system reset button.

I took the liberty of reviewing your rating history, and I noticed a few things. Your karma tends to trend upwards except for when you get into various argument threads, whereupon you tend to shift posting styles to a more abrupt, almost to the point of abrasiveness style, and people don't react well to that and rate you down. Still, there are a few clusters ratigns that were probably a bit towards karma camping territory early on in your posting career, so I'm going to go ahead and reset you to 3.00 base karma and allow you to sink or swim in the system from this point forward without any lingering karma issues from your past. Sound fair enough for now?

The karma system is working as intended.

Wow, I think that's the most informative post I've read about the karma system here. Thanks for that.

Thanks for resetting the karma too. ^^ We'll see what happens.
