I tried searching, but I don't have premium yet =/ (soon though!)

I am looking for a post or part of the wiki that describes the various forum mechanics, like what the stars under our name are, what scholar and sage mean, what rating someone up or down actually means for them, etc.

Thanks so much if you could point me in the right direction!

Stars are based on post count. 50 posts = 1 star, 250 = 2, 1k = 3, 4k = 4, 10k = There is no 5th star, 20k = Nope, no 6th star either. Jophiel = 4 stars, with a J in the middle.

Sage/scholar/guru is based on karma:
<3.01 = user
3.01-3.66= scholar
3.66 (or 3.67, idr)-4.33 = sage
4.33(again, might be 4.34, idr)-5.0 = guru
>5.0 = kao (might be others with > 5.0 karma, but afaik, he's the only one still, which was caused by a rounding bug that was fixed years ago).

Rating someone up/down adds a 1.00 or 6.00 rating to a post. A post's total score is based on the average rating of all ratings. Every post is double rated at the poster's base karma score. For example, my karma is 2.98, so if someone rates me up once, the score will be 2.98+2.98+6/3 = 3.98. A post can't go above 5. Additionally every 3 consecutive rate downs are rated -1 instead of 1 (only the third/6th/9th/etc are, not the others), which is why rating down an unrated post can actually bring it up to sub default.

Thanks so much! Also, what is the score, Decent, Good, Excellent? Does that also have to do with karma?
Oh yeah, and where can I check my score? or is that possible?

0-.5 = unrated
.5-1.5 = sub default
1.5-2.5 = default
2.5-3.5 = decent
3.5-4.5 = good
4.5-5 = excellent

Oh, and whatdya know? My karma is actually 3.00 now.

I know this is going to get old =P, but I think this is my last question:
I see you and a few other ballers with a ton of posts with custom tags, is that premium, high posts, mod appointed or what?
Also, is there a way to tell your exact karma, or do you only know based on your "Scholar, Sage, Guru" rating?

Custom titles are awarded by admins to people with 10k posts.

You used to be able to see your karma, but people complained too much when they got rated down, so that was removed years ago. You can still figure it out by rating yourself in specific combinations (you can rate your own posts, or anyone elses, an infinite amount of times in your own journal, so that's easy enough) and seeing if you're at sub default, default, decent, etc. For example, rating me up 2x gets me excellent, but i'm not scholar yet, so my karma score must be between 3.00 and 3.01. Typically it's not quite that simple, and will require some math to find a way to narrow it down to within .01, but it's always pretty easy to get an estimate. For example, if one rateup gets you excellent, then you know you're above 4.5*3=13.5, 13.5-6=7.5, 7.5/2=3.75. Of course >3.75 isn't a very specific number, and would require a few other combinations of ratings to narrow it down to a more exact range, but it'll give you a quick idea of what you're at.

edit: for the titles, if you mean below the name, that's the 10k title (ie One flew over the cukcoo's next for me), if it's part of the name (ie the prohpet), that's a premium feature.

Here's some more info you might not be aware of.

I swear the FAQ used to have vague information about Karma. Not anymore I guess.

Thanks to two hours worth of SCIENCE with jinte (who's karma should be between 3.43~3.46), i notice some of this is actually wrong.

Every third rate down is actually -2, not -1 (idk how i remembered that wrong), which has been said by kao before.

Also, more importantly, self rate downs are ALWAYS 1, and never -2. This is clearly seen by needing more rate downs to drop yourself to sub default than it takes others to do. Also obvious because it's impossible to rate yourself down to unrated.

Otherwise, yeah, anyone with a journal and a few hours of free time can figure out their karma, or at least a range it can fall in (finding an exact value is going to be insanely hard, and probably take a series of 100-200+ rates to find one where you can tell exactly which decimal it ends in. We got really lucky with jinte getting such a small range. We had it narrowed down to 3.22~3.45, and then using 23 rate downs followed by 2 rate ups just happened to put the cutoff at 3.42, which sub-D being lower, and default being higher, and we just happened to get default, otherwise we'd have been left with a far larger range).

Awesome, thanks so much guys, and that was exactly the thread I was looking for, though it said this about journals:

Quote:
As a security precaution, journal owners are unable to rate their own posts. For assistance with removing journal posts that are no longer needed, please contact a forum admin by reporting the post, posting in the feedback forum. Please do not PM an admin as your request may go unnoticed or delayed.

Is that outdated?

Yep. Coming from one of the guys who uses his journal regularly.

As my own journal admin, I can rate/nuke/sticky/lock any post in my journal.

Probably. Also, TLW has prompted me to start sleeping less, so i have even more time on my hands now.

Alexonfyre: You can rate yourself, but the ratings don't actually count, and won't help your total karma.

More specifically, none of the ratings you get in a journal count.

Think of them as like the points on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and ratings in normal forums as REAL CASH MONEY. :-D

I think they should bring the numbers back. Sure, they made more work for me, but it was an excuse for people to come to the forums more often to see if they "leveled up"

You should totally try to convince whoever could make that change of that.

This might be the understatement of the year. Smiley: clown

Make it happen! In regards to it being more work for you, if you get PMs with people complaining about camping, and the complaints are silly, just camp them for a while and let them know why. And camp them with nukes. People will get the idea pretty quickly.
