I love this little page, but I was wondering if there is any chance the graphs could be tweeked to show the year and the month, rather then the year and the day, which ends up being completely confusing. Thanks a lot, it's a really cool feature.

It's actually a code that spells out TPO is a dirty rotten spammer. Or something Smiley: grin

I don't really spam much Smiley: frown

I just have a lot to say, and tons of time to say it.

Really though, i had been wondering wtf that number was for months. I never would have thought it'd be the year+day.

Without any confirmation I can't of course say for sure, but knowing dates in code, and looking at the numbers I can't imagine what else it'd be. I'd assume he's getting the date, and then doing some string formatting, and that he made the wrong assumption about what order the month and the day was in.

According to your post graph, you made some 9k posts in a year and then 10k more in five months (assuming the numbers have been fixed, otherwise it's 10k posts in five days). What boggles me is that your post-per-day is only 8 or so while mine is 13. How can you make 20k posts in two years and have a lower PPD than 27k posts over 5 years?

27k / 5 = 5400 posts a year, or 14 posts a day.

20k / 2 = 10000 posts a year, or 27 posts a day.

Probably because it took me 3 years to get 1k. My first post was april 1, 2004.

yeah, since we didn't track signup date formerly, I had no way to do posts since signup; it's from the first post.

IIRC, and I don't have time to look, I actually generate the stats daily for that day, so anything in the past that was changed or whatnot wouldn't show in the past, but if, say, you got 1000 posts erased, you'd see funny stuff in the graph the day after :)
Like this? Or this?

It'd be cool to have a graph of posting rate.

you mean (posts/days)/time ?

If so, I don't store that anywhere (i.e. I can't). I also have a feeling the query to do it on the fly would be very expensive.
You could just calculate it based on the top 250 list. You could even just use an average of posts/day for every week (or maybe 3-4 days), to keep it more stable, instead of bouncing up and down, which would simply require calculating (postcount-postcountfrom1weekago)/7, for 250 people once a week.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I'd imagine doing it daily would be expensive, but if you did it quarterly, I'd think that would be doable.

It's not stored, so he'd generate it when you went to the page. Top 250 posters isn't terribly relevant, as you'd have to click the link to activate it anyway.

Another way to do it is just do a transform on the posting graph which implicitly has the info. First derivative!

I posted like 20-30 times in 2004, 100 or so in 2005, none in 2006, a little over a thousand in 2007, 3000~ in 2008, another 3500~ in 2009, and 12000 so far in 2010. I've had an insane amount of free time in the last year, and october/november, i really started spending most of that time here....Now that i think about it, that's right around when i got banned in ffxi Smiley: laughSmiley: laugh

My problem with gaining a high post score has always been slow moving forums. That's why my score increased exponentially back when I posted in the OOT, but the OOT was also not as lively as it is now, so often I'd be "last poster" in the top 10-15 threads. Likewise I find that I have to hold back now that I'm only posting in the WoW forums, because otherwise I'd be "last poster" in every single thread there - except for the contest thread, of course.

I mean, 12k posts in half a year is just nuts. Joph has gained some 8k posts since I last saw him, which is a couple of months ago as well, at the most. How do you guys do it? Is it this new journal thing I've heard so much about?

For TPO it's the journal conversations, for joph I think it's just responding to varus and Gbaji. He only has 14 posts/day though, which isn't that much.

Given weekends, it's more like 19 of course.

Partly it's journals. Kirby's journal moves quite quick, considering only ~7 people post in it regularly. Ffxi forums also move pretty quickly too though. I can usually get 30~ posts a day just in ffxi forums. =10 is the most active forum, with about twice as many posts per day as the oot/asylum (see this, i actually just went over this recently).

When I search for myself on that page, then try to sort by date... it sorts just by month/day, not year. Also very confusing.

Not sure why you would sort by date though, since it does that (properly) by default.
