It seems a lot of the people not familiar with these forums are having a hard time discerning 'Reply to this' from 'New Subject' which causes them to create a new thread instead of a reply.

Would it be possible to rename "New Subject" to "New thread" and "Reply to this" to "Reply to thread"? I'm fairly certain it would solve our problem, or at least give us a valid reason to ridicule those who still fail.

Thank you.

Edit: Alternatively, just remove "New Subject" altogether.

Yeah, gotta say, I can't see any reason why there's an option to make a new thread while you're already inside another thread. It's not all that hard to go back to the actual forum page to make a new thread.

It seems to be a common thing in all the forums I frequent, but I agree that I don't really think it's necessary. I've personally only ever actually used it once or twice.

I never noticed this feature until I saw this thread, but now that I know it exists, I finally figured out why at least some new posters are making new threads for their entries rather than replying to the designated thread. So, yeah, I agree that the "New subject" and "Reply to this" buttons should be edited to remove any potential confusion, or at the very least remove the "New subject" button from threads, since it seems more to logical to return to the forum board before creating a new topic.

Is there any chance we could get someone to look at this before the contest ends? Not that the fix won't be needed afterwards (though to a lesser extent), but today alone I've reported, what, a dozen posts for being outside the contest thread?

I'm sure the forum admins are just as tired of having to respond to my "Contest post outside of contest thread" reports as I am of making them (though that particular phrase is on the clipboard for easy copy-pasting).

You don't have to report them, we've all been casing the joint and deleting at will. :) Which we will continue to do for the next 3 days, then it's over. Please don't complain any more, you aren't helping anyone at this point.

That is a relief. I would rather stick a needle in my eye than report any more of those threads.

I dare not look at the announcement on the home page, either. Smiley: lol

I spent nearly all day there, logged out to have dinner and movie with the hubby after an hour of SC2. Vlor is a late nighter, he or Kao will get them until I log back in in the morn!

Sorry, I thought I was helping out the general populace by requesting this change, not to mention all the newbies who can't figure out which link to click. Considering you told me to make this thread in the first place, and given your constant nuking of stray threads, I figured I'd be helping you out as well.

I'll stop the complaining, though. I guess the developers took the week off, which is cool. Only reason I made this second, um, complaint (?) was due to a sudden increase in stray threads, with some of them being double posts even. And with this new change to the WoW forum size, our forum runs over easily.

By the way, if the developers are taking the week off, who cut our forum in half?

Edit: Forgot to mention that I won't be reporting anymore stray threads. Was never my intention to bother anyone, only to help out.

The admins who nuked threads. Nuked threads are still there, and admins will see them on the first page, but to everyone else, they're invisible, so it just looks like there are less threads displayed. This leads to some pretty amusing pages sometimes.

Ahh, makes sense (or not). I thought nuked posts were simply cut out and moved to the recycling bin. Was wondering why only the WoW forum had been reduced. Smiley: lol

Never mind then, I'll go back to trolling the newbies.

Nope, posts never go anywhere, ever. If you check the source, you can even see comments for nuked posts (like this: <!-- missing message (1280215538171182959) skipped -->). Even the OP of a moved thread is still where they originally were, it just copies the OP to the new forum, makes the original invisible, creates a new post saying the thread was moved and locks it, and changes the forum for all the replies. The original post is still there though, and can even be replied to (assuming you can still find the original post).

I haven't even put in the request. I have spent most of my time nuking threads, among my other responsibilities. Last night I took some time off to play SC2 and hang with my hubby who I won't see again until Sat at some point.

Just because we want things, doesn't mean it will happen immediately and devs do have their own lists of things to do. I will put in the ticket today for your request when I add the others.

You can continue to report if you like, just don't gripe at me because you had to. :) Thank you for being helpful, you rock!

Oh, DF, you know I lub ya.

Didn't realize you had to make a ticket and all kinds of stuff. I just figured I'd have to go tell Nizdaar, or whoever's in charge nowadays, to go get a pot of coffee and get to work. This whole ticket-corporate-administration thing is so new and scary.

Also, thank you. Smiley: smile

I don't drink coffee. Or any form of caffeine for that matter.

Ya, we actually have a ticket system. No, it will never be open to the public. We used to keep track of issues in a staff forum but uh, that didn't work so well. It just meant the latest issues got dealt with and the old ones never did.

Just say it like it is. You kept posting for obligatory rate-ups and all potential projects turned into massive CJ derails. Right? Smiley: sly

Just a thank you for the change and a small bug report:

The "Reply to this" link above each post now says "Reply to thread". I don't know if it's intentional or not, but it would be great if it said "Reply to post" or something. It does the same as "Reply to thread" except when you hit "Quote Original", it quotes that post instead of the OP.

In any case, the forums should now be idiot proof for the next contest, so great work. Smiley: thumbsup

If you want to quote OP, then click the OP? It works as intended, only thing I see changed is the wording, not the linking.

However, replying to thread should not be on each post, because each post is not a thread. Will ticket.

The next contest is already in progress on the FFXIV boards, and so far I've only seen one stray thread and that was because he missed and clicked the wrong one, so things are better for one reason or another.

Sure it is, though usually not for long. Idiots are remarkably creative.
