Is that 'advertisement' supposed to be there with 'Your MMO, Fail' 'My MMO, FTW' etc? It doesn't seem much like an alla-sponsered advertisement.

I took a chance and clicked on it, leads to a crappily designed EQII vs WoW poll with the SoE logo on the bottom of the screen. Not sure if it's legit though.

pretty lame if it's legit, if alla got hacked (again) that sucks.

It's on all forums(Despite all saying WoW). They've had these type of full-page ads on the frontpage of FFXI for awhile now.

The skin (what that advertising unit is called when the background is an ad) is intended.

Our wow site has had skins on it for over a year whenever that ad unit was sold.

I wouldn't normally comment on the advertising running on our sites unless it breaks one of our guidelines, but there seems to have been some concern over the legitimacy of that ad unit.

Thank you for the information. The ad just looks of a lot less quality than what the normal ad units look like for the site skins. It looked a lot like the site was hacked and someone put a fake ad up in the background to taunt the site/hosts/admins/etc.

Like niz said, it's a legit ad from SOE, and the site it leads to is a SOE site (despite the URL not being an official SOE URL) and the survey is safe to take.

My personal feelings as an EQ2 player is that a really good ad that lead to a page that detailed all the awesome changes they have made would work better but.... maybe that's why I'm not in marketing!

Personal feelings aside, what does an EQ2 ad have to do with World of Warcraft? I'm a premium member and couldn't care less about adverts, but wouldn't it be a more sensible advertisement strategy to put a WoW related advert on the WoW template/forum?

I can't even begin to imagine what a non-EQ2 player might contribute with to a survey like that. Probably nothing good, considering the advert is provocative in that it markets EQ2 as better than the game the clicker is playing.

If you rephrase it, you get something like "I win, you suck, now please fill out this survey for me." Well, pardon me for playing an inferior game with a superior subscription base. Allow me to help you out now that you've told me how much I suck.

Doesn't seem productive, that's all.

I have to agree, I just filled in the survey (derp 5 questions + a comment line). and the answer was simple for why I play wow and not EQ2... less grinding and the raiding game isn't even comparable (at least imho)....but personal feelings aside I find that the ad is one of the least-effective/classless ads that I have seen on a real site. might as well have been adultfriendfinder.

When was alla hacked last? Does this happen often? I haven't noticed it.

It's a EQ2 ad, not a WoW ad. They are trying to pull people from other games (specifically WoW) using the ad. If anything you would question why it's on the EQ2 site.

It might be, but I doubt Allakhazam cares very much about how effective the advertisements are as long as they get paid for it.

Why would anyone checking the WoW site not already be into WoW? I'm guessing putting anything third-party WoW related would be a problem since they might be infected and other MMO companies can probably pay more than a small third-party company.

Meh, it's not so much the choice of advert I'm pondering, since I know you guys would grab anything that might help the site run, and I support that. It's more the advert itself.

Telling a potential customer how much his current product, and thus the customer, fails does not seem like a sound marketing strategy.

The servers have never been sucessfully compromised. We have had DDoS (Direct Denial of Service) attacks that have knocked us offline, but no attacker (and there have been many over the years) has suceeded in taking even partial control of the site. Ever.

Seems the marketing people at SOE have come to the same conclusion seeing as they've altered the ad so it now says "Tell me why your MMO is so cool".

More like, they received the data and it shows WoW beating out EQ 100 to 1 and now they're asking "WTF!? Okay, why is WoW SO FREAKING COOL!? TELL ME WHY! DO IT! DO IT!"

If they want to know.... why don't they just try WoW for a few hours? It doesn't take long, for a person to see some of the cool things about WoW... everything from how smooth the gameplay is, to the graphics, to how fast the game loads up, etc.

I'm assuming you've never gotten far enough to get a flying mount, and see some breath-taking scenery while flying high on a dragon, if you have a computer strong enough to set max view distance and/or other settings high.

I've never played it, but i've always been amused by the cartoony graphics.

Not to make this a wow vs (insert mmo here) thread, I was amused at first by them as well. The benefit to the cartoony graphics is that it scales better, and never really looks as outdated as an older mmo (say, the original EQ), it is easier for them to up the pixel-count or up the texture quality without needing to re-make the entire game engine. At least that is how I've always seen it.

High resolution cartoons are still cartoons. And they aren't even good looking cartoons either. They always seemed like they were designed to be amusing.

It's not as bad as you think. I mean, this isn't a game adapted from a live-action movie or a book, it's based on a 90's RTS game franchise. Naturally it's going to look a bit like those games, otherwise it might as well be World of Whatever.

I think it's funny when EQ2 and FFXI players say WoW has shoddy graphics because it's cartoony. I've played FFXI and EQ2. It's not like they're omgrealism.

Besides, they're making improvements to WoW in just about every expansion. Realistic shadows in the most recent one and the next will feature new water graphics.

Compared to wow they are. At least ffxi is. I can't really speak for eq2, but based on the screenshots i have seen it's certainly 1000x more realistic than wow, and at least isn't intended to look completely ridiculous.

Apparently you've not seen screenshots from the World of Warcraft that the rest of us play. Please do share these 1000x less realistic and completely ridiculous screenshots. I'm pretty intrigued now, actually.
