We have changed the menus so they no longer require clicking to change the 1st tier. Instead, just mousing over them will change them, now.

If you don't see the changes yet, you may need to clear your cache/do a forced reload in your browser.

I actually can't decide which is worse, how it was before or how it is now.

Yeah, this is plain irritating now. I shouldn't have to be extra careful when moving my mouse to make sure I don't rollover something else and have the menu change on me when I never even clicked a button.

Did you guys mention you'd be doing this? Because I would have mentioned I would be against it.

[EDIT] To be specific, we have a 25px range to stay in. If I accidentally jerk the mouse up over a small 25px (at most), we lose the menu we were on. Yes, it's not a major issue but it's just about as annoying as the problem you tried fixing by changing it to this.

What were they trying to fix? People with missing index fingers being unable to navigate the menus or what?

Edit: It shouldn't be a problem with accidentally mousing over another menu since it appears to revert back to your original selection a few seconds after you move the cursor away again, if nothing in the sub-menu is selected.

Something about it being a number of unnecessary clicks to get somewhere. I wasn't all that concerned, but it was a minor valid point.

I do see it reverts to the last menu you were on if you mouse-off. I suppose that's not too bad, although I can also see that causing problems if we accidentally mouse off the menus when we were actually trying to pick something in a new menu and it reverts to the original menu we were on...

It's all minor and I'll live with it, but I think a better menu concept would have made this a lot easier. Child rollout menus, for example.

It has a timer before that happens, so it can revert to the default menu without causing issues while in the currently highlighted menu.

Hopefully they didn't implement this to get rid of the problem with unnecessary clicks to get somewhere. The issue isn't the clicking. The issue was never the clicking. Unless you're literally missing your index fingers, or have never used a computer before, you know how to left-click on a mouse with some amount of speed. At least fast enough for the actual click not being the issue.

The issue was that you had to spend time browsing through all those sub-menus to get to the link you wanted when those links were directly visible before. Yes, this new menu thing is more easy on the eye if you're new here, but for those who had been using the same layout since the site was first built, browsing through all those visible links was much faster.

Compare it to my room, for instance. Yes, someone who walks in here might find it chaotic and would believe I spent unnecessary time going through the randomly spread out stuff to find what I needed. However, I know exactly where to find everything, at least the stuff I've been using regularly. If someone comes into my room and starts tidying it up, I'd not be able to find my own ***.

Am I the only one with muscle memory or what?

I like most of the changes so far but this one pisses me off. I hate having a main menu change to something I don't want because I was a fraction of a second too slow moving my mouse or a pixel too high. Forcing me to go back and reselect the main-menu I was on and hope it doesn't flip again as I retry selecting a sub-menu is extremely irritating.

Smiley: mad Please revert it back to clicking!!!! Smiley: mad

I was wondering what was up with the menu bar. This is freaking annoying. I didn't mind the extra clicking, but just going within a few pixels of another bar causes it to switch. It's not too bad with my USB mouse, but when I can only use the touchpad mouse, I find myself constantly going through the other sub-menus that I don't want nor care about.

Can we get rid of it please?

I found the old side menus irritating and wasteful of space. The drop downs were good, and the new menus were better aside from the clicking. I'm going to agree with Kaolian here and say this is a great change. If you're having that much trouble mousing over a menu, perhaps you should put your computer away and check into the old folks home already.

It's a 25px menu. That's extremely small, almost the size of the mouse cursor. As mentioned, some people have a touchpad or the sort and it makes it frustrating.

The forums tab (the second smallest one) is 63x30. The mouse cursor is what? 8x8?

I'm on Windows 7 and my mouse cursor is about 80% of the menu height.

The "main" menus (home/database/etc) aren't the issue, it's that the "sub" menu (news/contact/etc) are the same @#%^ing height as the "hand" mouse over cursor.

That and going forums -> FFXI General I keep getting the damn wikibase tab.

Well it's not like you need to have the entire cursor over the button...

I mean i likes it better clicking on the tabs myself, but in the end, it's really not that big a deal.

Never said I had trouble with it, just said it was faster the old way.

Now, considering the snide remarks in your post that remind me of this old, grumpy man I once knew, perhaps you'd care to join me for some prune juice and jitterbug with the ladies later on?

Just popping in to mention that mouseover menus, or mouseover anything for that matter, will be the downfall of our civilization. Anyone caught implementing them should be shot.

Mouseover previews are nice, though, especially since you can turn them on/off yourself.

Pretty much this. Mandatory mouseovers have always annoyed me. The reverting thing, while it does make it usable, just seems like a stupid cop-out to me.

Are you serious? Possibly the worse thing you could say. Wasteful of space? How is this not a waste of space?

I have ended up in the Asura server forums, the Monk job forums, and some tradeskill forums already this morning.

Yeah, have to throw my two cents in with a "Do not want" on this one, guys. Sorry.

#24REDACTED, Posted: May 03 2010 at 9:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You guys do know that you're not supposed to try and click on the menu item with the whole mouse pointer, right? Just the upper left portion of it (the index finger or the tip of the arrow)... So ya...if you're trying to mash menu items with the palm of your e-hand or the shaft of your e-arrow, I say just go back to ************ and leave the tech stuff to people with a little more finesse...

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but...

When viewing this website from the iPhone (and i asume every other mobile phone), you cannot get the dropdown thing hovering over it. Instead, clicking on "Forums", will load the dropdown thing for a second, but then also make it start loading the Allakhazam's Forums List page.

Which gets you where you want to go eventually, it's just another 40-50 seconds of extra page loading involved. Instead of just hitting "Forums" once, and then going to the dropdowned list.

Could you keep the first click dropdown, second click forums list thing for mobile users?

Could "Race Forums" be moved to the "More FFXI" group (or to the right of "More FFXI")? It's a waste of space on the FFXI menu bar, but it's 100 extra pixels I have to move to get to the "FFXI Feedback" forum. (Which has x posts/hour, instead of x posts/week...)
