I remember being able to check exactly what number my rating is in regards to the Karma system. However, I can't seem to find that number anywhere. Has there been some change to the Karma system?

Yes. To many people cried when they got rated down, so they took it away.

He's right. We remove it quite some time ago because too many people were complaining/contacting an admin/QQing if they were rated down even once.

After hearing the reason for that... that's just pathetic.

You realize that we can still see that we've been rated up or down by just viewing our sub-default-excellent scores? I mean, you even have the **** on the side when we go into our account and view our posts. Then, you can see all of them at once. Is this really any better than the numbers?

"You" should bring back the numbers or finish the job "you" started.

Yeah, but clearly just removing the numbers fixed the problem, so why remove it altogether? Not every rate up or rate down changes the Score.

What the hell, it doesn't matter.

Because the rating system is pointless. Guru, sage, scholar, they all mean nothing. They're nothing more than a popularity contest.

Says who? Apparently a lot of people care about it(admins getting spammed about every rate down ever, as stated before, proves this), making it NOT pointless. Sad, but true.

So then if you guys don't care about it, why would you want it removed? Thought you didn't care!

edit: the rating system is meant to encourage people to post better. Maybe you guys don't realize this, but it does work. It's just not obvious. Hell, I'll admit I do care a little (not enough to ***** about it), and so I try to post better. Sometimes.

Yes it is, but it doesn't work. For every person it makes post better, it scares someone else off from posting for fearing of being rated down.

How can you possibly figure that? You're just making that up. This debate is pointless.

Because people have frequently said they don't post sometimes because they're afraid they'll get rated down?

So that makes it a 1:1 ratio that for every good poster, another is scared away? (also I've never seen it, but if you say that it's frequent, ok then.)

I can't honestly say that I have hard numnbers, because I don't. But back when I first started posting, I saw many new posters fade off because they found their own server forums to be too harsh, let alone on the main board or in a job forum.

You're 100% right about this debate being pointless though.

Just remove the karma system and replace it with a "Report post" feature that auto-nukes posts with X amounts of reports.

Would enable us to get rid of spammers/advertisers without having to organize rate-down raids, and it would severely cut back on the abuse of the rating system, considering there wouldn't be one anymore. Reporting a post would flag it for an admin, so if someone starts reporting stuff that shouldn't be reported, the admin can step in and revert the nuke, or whatever.

Of course, we'd lose out on snazzy titles and colorful usernames, not to mention the ability to throw virtual back-pats and middle fingers at each other.

There's already a Report Post button. Its that one that says Report.

Too simple. Needs to be more elaborate.

Makes it even easier to implement my suggestion. All that's needed is an auto-temporary-nuke when X amount of reports are filed - possibly the "flag for admin attention" thing as well, if it's not already happening.

And perhaps the forum is better off without a good chunk of those posts? It seems to me that a lot of people who complain about pointless ratedowns are actually posters who said something thoughtless or rude but couldn't grasp the negative response. There are random ratedowns, sure, but there are a lot more that were earned.

The system doubtless has its flaws, but I see very few white names who consistently post supportive and helpful information, and very few red or green names who are constant idiots. Just try to find a troll Sage or Guru with more than 100 posts.

I'd rather have a system that makes people a little scared of posting idiocy than the way every second post is rude or argumentative garbage. The average at Alla isn't a lot better, but it is better.

Some, but not all of them. Killing two to save a hundred? See: bottom of this post.

I recently had to deal with a karma camper myself. Nasty business, but most of all because it made me unsure whether or not I should post at all. I don't care about the rating itself since my post count pretty much solidifies my rating, but I was afraid I was starting to be rude, which would indicate my time to leave. Luckily it was just one person with a grudge, apparently. Still irks me that someone out there could deliver anonymous mud-flinging without me being able to find out why. If you rate someone up or down, you should be able to stand by that action, so I don't see why it's so hush-hush about who rates who.

I believe you start at white/orange/whatever. If you don't get rated up at all, you stay there when you get past the 12/16 posts where the karma kicks in. I've seen people post useful stuff, get rated up and then get rated down for being rated up at sub-100 posts. Yes, you read it right. People are rating others down for being rated up. Ladies and gentlemen, that's just silly.

As for finding a troll Sage or Guru with 100+ posts, have you ever been to the Out of Topic forum? Or hell, even the game forums have their sort. Granted, I don't post a lot of useful stuff anymore, usually because the days of making guides and such are over with the various wikipedias out there, but I still chime in with something useful once in a while. I used to post under the alias 'Qaoz' and did some pretty stupid stuff in the Asylum back then. I decided to start over and focused more on the OOT and WoW game forum. I hit Sage pretty fast by providing some useful guides and advice for new players, but then my past history was dug up and the Asylum in its entirety came by to pay me a visit, sending me down to sub-default. 25k posts later and I've finally managed to move my default posting score from 'Decent' to 'Good'. I should hit Sage in about 20k posts. Or I could start over again and hit Sage within a day.

I'd rather have a system that works. I know I'm asking a lot, but assuming the cake isn't a lie, it should be possible to get it and eat it too.
