I've watched this site develop it's FFXI content over the years. You've been decent at keeping your info semi-update. I've watched this site add more and more premium-only features to the site. Some of which I question whether or not should be premium. These would be features I could get free elsewhere, like Advanced searching on items (Somepage), avatars(just about anywhere else), advanced mob searching (Vana'diel Beastiery). Up to now, I figured fine, this is a package deal.

But now, your skillchain calculater is a premium only feature. You're only just about the last one on board for this feature, and you feel like we should pay for it when damn near everything else had one for free before you. Killing Ifrit, your direct rival, has a free one and has had for ages. I even got very quick results for one on google for a fairly nice one here. Heck, even Firefox has a Skillchain Plugin that lets us calculate skillchains without even browsing the web. You want money for yours, you've got to be kidding me.

I understand you're a business and need to make money to stay in business. However, charging more for the same service is not a very good business practice. Charge money for cool new things you come up with, not things that everyone else is doing for free already.

As I recall our Skillchain Calculator was always a premium feature.

I hear what you're saying.

Interesting fact: I have been using this site for 2-3 years. But I did not even know it has a skillchain calculator - and now that I do know, I'm not even going to bother trying it out. I like AlexisLucia's calculator and it works for me.

I wasn't going to renew my premium and for a while didn't. It was the new sig images that convinced me. Not the feature that's free everywhere else.

It's good to see that at least some people (Pikko etc) have the capacity to come up with new interesting features while the bosses that be work on the - are you kidding me? - "Zam Network".

Damn it, the move ate my post!

Paste:

I didn't know that it was Premium only, but to be honest I didn't even know we had one until Exo started working on it, haha!

Anyway, the way I look at it is, we're expanding the services available for existing premium members, not asking people to sign up because they want to use our calculator. It's been quite obvious for a while that a certain site has more features and gets more attention than this one while the premium members here still pay the same price. Something we've been trying to focus on is to make the FFXI premium subscription worth the price. (sigs, crafting sheets, etc.)

I understand your frustration, but this feature is a part of our entire premium package and to look at it as a single feature you're paying for is not looking at the whole picture.

It's not a personal frustration really, but it is funny to me. I already go to all the sites for the various features I mentioned in the first post(and I love my Firefox Plugin). It was more expressing concern about which features you choose to be pay features and which are free.

Off the top of my head I can tell you adding Direct Item Comparisons as a feature would be a very nice addition to your premium services.

Let the user query items based by various inputs (like naming items or naming a specific boost to compare by) then breaking down all the items that fit the description and sub-sort them by equipment slot.

I bet you'd get people to pay for your premium accounts with nifty stuff like that.

That's interesting.

At the moment you are allowed to compare items in that manner for free. Just as an example check out:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/skillmods.html?fskillmod=22

It will list all the items that have accuracy and how much. Perhaps at soome stage we could develop that to include specific jobs or combinations.

Good idea. Worth keeping in mind for sure.

The result is a bit cluttered. As a suggestion I think being able to sort and refine the list would be a very desirable feature.

For example having it search for all accuracy modifiers between levels 20-40, or searching for all accuracy modifiers that give more than +3. Or even cross searching both simultaneously. Possibly search for only a specific job as well.

And an extra little bit that would be nice is the ability to then have the option to sort the list alphabetically, from greatest to least modifier, by level.

I have no idea how much programming work would be involved for the staff, but since this is only a sort feature it does not seem impossible. Just an idea.

Not really. And it's clumsy about a lot things. Like if you search for an item that adds attack it will also list every item with ranged attack, but no melee attack, as well. Plus that's not Allakhazam.^^

It's not so much the database. Alla already has it all, it's how you navigate it that I think they need to improve.

Also, paying for premium is not just for nifty little goodies. I also see it as an investment in a company I like and trust. I'm paying admins to keep the operation up and running and putting money into the time and effor it takes to code our new sigs and keep the server hamsters from getting too hungry.

Not to mention it's 3 damn dollars a month. Come on people, you can't plunk down $9.99 for 3 months of premium? I'm flat broke most of the time and I can still budget my $10 every 3 months.

That's always been my biggest issue with this site. Both for FFXI and WoW, there's nothing I can't find easier, faster, and often more accurate, all without paying anything, on some other site. The forums are the only reason I come here.

Think of a premium membership like donating to the site's owners to keep the site alive.
