First of all, i browse the FFXI forum's so all my experiances are from there.

Recently there has been an influx of new posters, these posters ask questions that have been tired out and are becoming Dead Horses which is starting to annoy a lot of people.

My idea is that you change the search function, allow non-premium members to do a basic search with only key words and one search field and let Premium members search by Name of Thread, Name of Poster, Date, Rating and Number of replies.

This would take away many of the repeated questions coming up while still leaving lots of reasons to get premium and would beniefit the boards.

Thanks for reading.

I appreciate the suggestion, I can see the point of making forum search available to all as better than only available to some. Will need to think on it though.

Thanks for considering it, perhaps you'd need to give the premium's something new like an ignore list for example

Heres an Idea, maybe all of us players can put our heads together and write some decent guides for all of the common questions and breath some life into the guide section.

I'll unlock my journal, we can start work on it there if anyone is interested.

I would be willing to help, I think a common questions area for new players would be great! I hate to see them running around without signet, and throwing away beastmen seals.

My understanding was that this option was intentionally left out to discourage karma campers from getting over zealous and rating every single post someone has ever done down through one search. If it were put in or not, I think these are great ideas. Unfortunately, you can never FORCE new posters to use the search functions, but I know we regularly wave the premium carrot in front of the new posters on the main EQ forums, and it's gotten some to join.

I want to comment here b/c I thought the administration might appreciate a non-premium member's input. The only reason I have considered getting a premium account is for the search feature. Yes, the other features are nice, but not good enough for me to ever switch over. Thus the selfish part of me would love for you to add this feature for the non-premium members. However, the decent part of me thinks that it would be unfair to take more advantage of this site than I already do without contributing through a premium account. I suspect a few more people would not switch over to premium accounts if you add a basic search feature to non-premium accounts. Take that as you will.

I created a post with links to most of the good guides/informative posts on the thief forum awhile back. (And the the nice people in the admin finally decided was sticky worthy. ^^ ) Did it help eliminate repeat questions? I think it did a little. I get really excited when I see an old guide/post pop up on the first page again. It indicates that someone is using my sticky.

Does it eliminate the repeat posts? No. Absolutely not. Think for a moment about how many new "How do I fish?" and "How do I garden?" posts are constantly appearing in the Tradeskill Forum. You would think between Popsi's Link Sticky and Pikko's awesome gardening site 99% of those posts would be eliminated. Some people just refuse to use the resources given to them. I have trouble believing these people would use a search function any better than they use popsi's sticky.

It is still worth making the guides though. Most people are smart enough to use them. While I am certain the administrators have tried to implant brains in the ones who don't, the transplants have consistently failed.

.....

Do you have any idea how long it takes to manually search through the posts in the thief forum? Do you have a brain transplant handy perchance?
