Karma trollingFollow

#1 Jun 23 2004 at 11:50 AM Rating: Good
Some Karma trolls have been active lately, going through and nuking every post on this

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1087934503785398329&page=1

thread

Also I have a question about "positive Karma Trolling" a lot of times when I see a thread that's been trolled like the one above I"ll go through and rate everyone to excellent to try to bump them back up, could that be considered trolling?

The reason people are rated the original post down is because it doesn't offer anything constructive.. or anything at all to the boards. And other people are gettin rated down for actually replying to it.

If you ask me, that entire thread should be locked and/or nuked. It is pointless, completely unrelated to the game, and has no place on the main FFXI forum. The fact that posts on that thread are being rated up or down only further shows how inapropriate that thread really is.

It belongs in one of the off-topic forums, perhaps. But certainly not on the main FFXI forum. The last thing we need is yet another pointless "OMG LOOK AT MY CAPS!!!" style thread starting up, with no content and nothing but pointless rate ups (or rate downs).

how about my second question, that's what I was more interested in, guess the thread I posted was a bad example, but it happens every day.

Actually, there is anothe OGM thread. It's got ove 17300 posts on it.

There's no rating going on there though, I can guarantee you that, since I can see when people rate it.

Personally, I hate when people do this. If someone has gone through and blindly rated everyone down, going through and blindly rating everyone back up doesn't really solve the problem.

If you are going to take the time to fix the ratings, the ratings should be fixed in a way that reflect the nature of the posts. Whenever I notice many good posts being rated down simply due to the nature of the thread, I will take the time to go through, and rate back up ONLY those posts that I feel are actually quite decent, even if they may have differing views. There is no point in blindly rating up the bad posts. The person rating them down orignally may not have put any thought into the rating, but just because someone is a Guru, Sage or Scholar doesn't mean they deserve to have their post blindly rated back up if it is off-topic, inflamatory, or adds nothing to the discussion.

Rate each post on its own merits. If the thread is being karma trolled, give the good posts an "Excellent" rating instead of a "Good" rating, or give the bad posts an "Awful" to compensate a little. But blindly rating in either direction doesn't solve the problem.

It was actually satire, and did prove a point later on down.
I understand the purpose of the post. I got a bit of a chuckle out of it at first as well. But when it degenerates into people posting multiple blank messages, or people nesting quotes to see how deeply nested they can be, then people go through and blindly rate everything up or down, it starts to get out of hand. Like I said originally, my only fear is that it will degenerate even more, and turn into another "OMG CAPS" thread...

Look, I never posted to the EQ forums here because I always considered AK a pretty respectable forum, and my knowledge of the game was never thorough enough to offer anything of value. It's frustrating to come here -- probably the most informative MMOG site on the web -- and have to sift through trash and posts that could have been answered by looking at the left navigation pane. Please excuse us for participating in a thread that offered a bit of relief from the non-sensical nature of what seems like more than half of the posts some days.

I realize this wasn't the original nature of this thread, but that's where it's gone and I have a hunch that the karma trolls that hit that thread may take a moment to step off of their soap boxes and read this post.

I'm very concerned about my Karma as I paid for the explicit purpose of becoming a scholar and trying to help rate posts. Instead I find my helpful posts on the ffxi tradeskill forum go un-rated, and then my attempted helpful posts on the main ffxi forum get BLASTED down in rating. My karma is dropping by the minute and I'm sitting here going "I paid 12 bucks so I could watch someone make it unfun for me to read a forum?" I mean is anyone patrolling the scholars? I just feel that too few scholars are rating non-scholars up for trying to help, and too many are just rating people straight to awful because a post isn't a perfect guide to something.

This is all from the ffxi forums, and I'm just getting disheartened about spend my money to get karma, when all that happens is someone else seems to randomly decide that I don't deserve it :-(

edit: so before i posted this i was 2.94, now I'm 2.92 as of posting, good to see, glad to know rating is being done fairly :-(

Karma rating and premium membership are completely un-related, so I don't know what you think you're spending money for.

thought i had to pay to have karma take effect and get scholar?
#14 Jun 29 2004 at 1:45 PM Rating: Good
Nope, Karma is determined by the scholar/sage's/guru's

Paying gets you other nice benefits like search features, getting to use an avatar, your own journal, etc.

Just be glad you didn't make a lot of dumb posts about Everquest before you really understood the game. I don't think I'll ever get out of this hole LOL.
