Proposal to cut down on the amount of virus generated e-mailFollow

It seems like the large majority of the virus generated e-mail and spam that is going out from the various @allakhazam addresses is coming from the indexed search pages. Some moron sets a web spider to go hit every e-mail address on a given domain, and poof, suddenly kaolain@allakhazam.com is sending you e-mails about discount viagra. No, I don't have any for sale. Stop asking me.

Anyways, here's how I have seen the situation delt with on other forums, maybe something similar could be done here relitivly easily?

Currently, clicking on the "e-mail user" button in the forum or from the profile generates an e-mail in whatever e-mail program you want via a hyperlink. That's all well and good in an ideal world, but that hyperlink contains our e-mail addresses.

What I would like to see instead is this: a new directory is created on the servers with every norobots.txt trick known to mankind to prevent it from being indexed by search engines. In this folder, every premium user would have a page with their e-mail address. Clicking on the "e-mail user" button in the forums would then load that page, where the user could then click on the e-mail address. I'm thinking in html terms here, so there may be some easier way to generate this in asp? I really wish I had learned ASP instead of cold fusion now. Anyways, yes, it would be one more click, but I think it would also cut down dramatically on the amount of spam that gets generated from the average user. You moderators that have e-mail addresses on the main pages would be probably out of luck unless someone went though the archive and replaced all the e-mail urls

Anyways, that's my idea, any feedback, up to and including "that's the stupidest idea I've ever heared" are welcome...

It's not necessarily a stupid idea, Kaolian. It's just that the robots.txt file (and most similar ideas) are voluntary. The person writing the search engine or bot or spider (or whatever you want to call it) has to voluntarily tell it to honor the instructions in robots.txt. Simply put, a spider that's designed to harvest emails for spamming purposes has no reason at all to obey robots.txt; in fact, I'm willing to bet some are programmed specifically to hunt about in blocked directories for just the reason you mentioned.

A more common trick is to have email links generated by a bit of JavaScript code, rather than by actually writing the email address for all to see. Depending on the sophistication of the spider, this will probably defeat most common email-harvesting techniques. For example:

<script language="Javascript">
    Username = "joe";
    Domain = "allakhazam.com";
    AtSign = "@";
    document.write ('<a href='mailto:" + Username + AtSign + Domain + "'>"
        + Username + AtSign + Domain + "</a>");
</script>

Ok, I'm confused by all of this. But can someone tell me why I'm getting all sorts of emails saying that Alienone@allakhazam.com has returned mail because it was virus infected. What exactly am I sending out to people?

you're not sending anything.

a "feature" of modern day viruses is that they no longer send the address of the person infected. what they do is go through a person's web browser's temporary files and scans for emails addresses.

Since your email address is available on this board, it means that many people have it in their temp files, and when oone of those people get infected, yours is amoung the addresses that's getting selected to send the email appearing as "From". (they tend to randomly select a bunch of emails)

That's how I get virus spam from myself. Along of course with so much spam saying "email rejected due to virus!" that I consider any email server that tells the SENDER of an email that they have a virus to be incredibly broken. The sender of 99.9% of virus emails is fake, they're trying to get you to open the email by ending it from people you know from websites.

Some day when I take over the world I'm going to solve hunger amoung Cockroaches by serving them the Barbqueued ********* of email virus writers, admins who don't turn off notification, and anyone who is so mind boggling stupid that they get infected with a computer virus.
