U C WUT I DID THAR???
•What is KARMA?
- KARMA, is what Allakhazam provides for users to filter out posters, and postings, they do not like, and don't want to bother reading. Many sites, including this one, have posters who run around in all the forums posting nonsense, or trying to start Flame wars. These are known as Trolls, and the KARMA system can help you deal with these.
- If you see a post that you do not approve of, and is pointless, or trying to start a Flame war, you can choose to "Rate down" that person. You do this by selcting the box underneath their name, and choosing the rating you want to give.
•KARMA ratings, what, and when to use them.
- KARMA ratings have 5 stages. These are:
- Awful [1.00] ~ If you deem a post unnecessary, offensive, containing inappropriate links, etc.
- Default [2.00] ~ If a post was not necessarily offensive, but possibly vulgar, unneeded.
- Decent [3.00] ~ Standard rating most post have. A typical post. Neither insightful, funny, offensive, vulgar.
- Good [4.00] ~ A good read. A helpful post, amusing, made you laugh. Someone made a nice topic that made you think.
- Excellent [6.00] ~ A very well, concise, thought out post. Even if you do not agree with the opinions, this poster cleary put alot of thought and effort into their reply. Also commonly used for guides. hint, hint...
A note as of 3/09/2008. Rating someone has recently changed, as you will now only see a Green (Rate Up) or Red(Rate down) arrow, in the upper right-hand corner of someones post.
•So, how do my KARMA ratings affect other users?
- Everytime you rate someone, you affect their base KARMA rating. This is a scale of 1.00-6.00, ((See below: "Base ratings")
- If a base user's rating gets below a certain point, they will become sub-defaulted, and their post will not be readable by those using filters.
•Base KARMA vs. Per Post KARMA ratings.
- As mentioned earlier, everytime you rate someones post, it affects their base KARMA rating. Each new poster, has a starting rating of 3.00. If they make good post, their ratings will go up, based on that fact. If they make bad post, annoying, or troll, they will soon be below the sub-default line, and you may filter out their post.
- Base KARMA rating, gives you different "Status", of which, there are four levels:
- User ~ - 3.00 This persons name is in Grey. They are new, or have been given a rating below the base 3.00.
- Scholar - 3.01-3.65 - Name is in yellow. Most posters you see will have this status.
- Sage - 3.65-4.39 - Name is in Red A good, useful poster. Often contributes useful information, ideas, thought out responses.
- Guru - 4.40-5.00 - Name is in 'Chartreuse'Or neon green.... An amazing poster. Has good ideas, insights, post maturely, doesn't flame. Often acheived by helping members, posting guides again with the hint, hint... etc. A hard title to earn. Administrators - T3H THRED GODZ. Do not anger these, for smite you, they will.
Please note, colors will depend on your stylesheet. The above is based off FFXI styles. ~Flix
•KARMA, and its proper use.
- That FlixEffect is a real moron. Can I KARMA camp him to sub-default?
No. Following someone around, for the sole purpose of "camping" their KARMA down to oblivion is not allowed, or be tolerated. If you are caught doing this, an Admin will correct said KARMA, and greatly punish you by lowering yours, to near, if not sub-default level. If you do not like a users single post, rate that post down. If it is truly a bad post, others will do the same, and they will get what they deserve. Or, if it is really bad, an Administrator will deal with it.
It is not your responsibility, or privelege, to KARMA "camp" someone yourself.
- Boy, that FlixEffect sure is a cool guy, can I rate all his post and get him to Guru?
Why, yes... Thank you ^^/
No, you cannot. It is the same as "camping" someones KARMA down. Rate people on a post by post basis, do not go scrounging for a certain users post, just to give them a certain rating. KARMA was not designed as a "popularity" tool, it was meant as a tool to weed out trolls, and reward helpful, useful, thought out posters.[/li][/ul]
•But, I really like everyone I post with, and I want to see them all Guru!
- Unfortunately, you cannot do this, and doing so, will in fact get an Administrators attention quite quickly, and everyones KARMA will be promptly reset. Unless a post is outstandingly funny, helpful, or well thought out, try to ignore the KARMA system for the most part. The same goes for rate downs. Unless a post is overly vulgar, crude, or offensive, please just carry on like there was no KARMA system.
•My KARMA has dropped alot recently, and I think someone is KARMA camping me, What can I do?
- The only step you can do in this situation is to report it to an Administrator, and allow them to look into the matter. DO NOT KARMA camp the person you believe to be offending you. This will only worsen matters.
•Everytime I post, it seems like I lose some KARMA! What can I do?
- Nothing, really. Sadly, there are alot of people who only troll these forums with the intent to rate people down. Just ignore it.
•I made some mistakes in my early days, and my KARMA took a bad hit, can I get it back up?
- In time, yes. Just keep posting, try to be useful, and not offend people, and your Karma will go back up. If you think you unfairly lost it, approach a site Admin.
•I don't really understand all of this, can't I just post and not worry about KARMA?
- Yes, in fact, this is the smartest thing you can do.
•I'm a tech-head programmer. Can you explain this in my language?
- Um, no. Not really. But Danalog sure can!

Every time someone rates you, it averages it into your total number of ratings:
num_rates++;
karma_new = (rating / num_rates) + (karma_old * (num-rates - 1) / num_rates)
Every time you post, you rate yourself twice at your current rating:
num_rates += 2;
karma_new doesn't change since it's at the same value as before
This way older posters "lock" themselves into their posts easier, since they have more total *rates*.

•Can you sum all of this KARMA stuff up for me?
- Sure. Just dont abuse the system. Rate ups are fine, rate downs are fine, just make sure they are for the right reason. Not just because you like someone, or want to see someone reach a status they may not deserve.

How and why you rate a post is your concern, however we ask that you keep a few things in mind. If you find yourself rating entire threads up or down, or following specific posters around and rating all of their posts one way, this is considered Karma camping, and is actively discouraged. Also, creating a secondary forum account for the sole purpose of buffering your own karma is considered cheating.
•Thanks for this guide, FlixEffect! And making it so pretty!
- I have no life. Your welcome.
•Any parting advice on KARMA?
- Yes. The number one rule of KARMA, is NEVER POST ABOUT KARMA. Ironic? Maybe...
- For more information, read the the bottom of this Allakhazam page.
•Wait a minute! I read this guide, and I cant even rate people! Whats wrong?
- A user must have a base rating of 3.01, at least 15 post, and Scholar status to be able to rate people. Keep posting, you will get it soon. Goodluck out there.
