I don't really want 'em either. A few is ok but towards Rally time there are an estimated extra 250,000 bikes on the roads, and that's terrible.
As to the "awareness" issue: Yeah there are idiots on bikes but in my experience the douches aren't riding Harleys and Gold Wings, they're riding crotch-rockets like they own the ******* road. Bad drivers (in cars) are bad drivers, period. It's just worse when they smack a cycle because, as you noted, no armor.
I'd like texting/cell use while driving to carry the same penalty as a DUI.
