It's why I'm here on the weekend. It takes a few extra hours to cancel out their ignorance. Smiley: glare

I'll get on that, though I fear I may be past that point. Sending people hopeful status updates saying you're making headway but aren't done yet has got to be in the gray area.

There is Dogpile but I think they just use results from other search engines.

My favorite was always hotbot before google came around. I think its powered by other ones as well now.

They called it quits earlier this year if I remember correctly. Probably because nobody actually knew the site still existed.

I use Ask Jeeves.

"Jeeves! Go find me some Thomas the Tank Engine Hentai!"

Then Jeeves quietly phones Child Protective Services...

The irony of using Google in a thread about switching from Google does not go unappreciated.

Jeeves has been put away for a long time now. There's still ways to bring him up, I guess, but that would require me to care enough to actually use crappy Google Ask.com

Honestly, I didn't bother watching the video. Why? Because isn't that the point of having a google account in the first place? It's more shocking to find people are shocked by it. Hell, every company everywhere is doing this. Hell, Target knew before some girl's father she was pregnant. Unless you go back to cash only, never accept reward cards, never use credit cards, live in some unlisted location, and never, ever use a phone line, your life is documented somewhere. And even if you lived off the grid, anytime you went into anywhere civilized, cameras record you from a few dozen places.

I get what you are aiming for. You like your ideas challenged online, to be exposed to new things. But every search engine will be slowly trying to analyze your patterns and guess what you want, because the more successful it gets at that, the better you perceive it to be.

Cute story but not really telling. I bet a lot of people find out that a teenage girl is pregnant before her father. Pregnant teenage girls are probably more conscientious about keeping it under wraps from Dad than hiding her vitamin purchases from Target.

The point is that they tracked her purchase history, and sent customized information to her. That's the goal of every company: customize their information specific to you in order to encourage your return patronage. They want you to think "Wow, just what I needed," or "That's odd, I do want to know more about..." The point of the first post is that Ari doesn't want to be locked into a little bubble, but the reality is that everyone collecting information wants exactly that.

I get that. But retailers do that for everyone. The hook was supposed to be "They knew before her father did!" which just seemed like a pretty silly thing to act surprised about.

It would likely be surprising to some, specifically those who didn't realize what Google was on about wanting you to be tracked based on your searches.

Google has nothing directly to do with the Target story.

Again, the hook from the Target story was "OMG They knew before her dad!" but, given that most people aren't trying to hide shit from Target (as opposed to hiding a teenage pregnancy from your dad), it's hardly any measure of how intrusive or omnipresent Target's data collection is. The mere fact that Target does data collection should surprise no one except maybe idiots who never looked at their own receipts and saw tailored coupons attached to it.

Um, how the hell do you figure that? Google collects your search data to target ads and content for you. They also sell that data to advertisers to make back money. Retailers gather that information to tailor coupons and use their predictive database to ship you coupons. They also provide their sales stats back to companies, though I doubt they get cash for that.

It's the same damn process. The story's hook may have been the OMG moment. My point in bringing it up is to show that data collection is literally everywhere, and information is the biggest commodity going right now.

Something about this is going over your head but I suppose I don't care enough to explain it for the 3rd, 4th, 5th time.

You're right. My comments about the Target story are totally connected to Google.

Unless the father is a blackout drunk, I think he's ruled out.

The big thing I took from the target story is they're a lot better at the whole predicting thing then most people thought they were, even those who were paying attention. It's one thing to notice someone buying crackers, and print out a coupon for a new brand of cracker, it's another to make the leap from buying unscented lotion to diaper coupons. Those hidden correlations were rather fascinating in a "oh, I guess I really do that too!" kind of way that's both amusing and slightly creepy.

At least I thought so. Smiley: um

It is creepy, but it's far from unexpected. Maybe I know a bit more just because I've dealt with corporations trying desperately to predict user desires, and in one case succeeding (current company, totally opposite, and it makes me laugh to see how they are missing the boat). Plus having stared at analytics on my own YT channel, it's fascinating the granularity they are getting to with something as pointless as YT views. Of course, it's pointless for me, but for a major corporation, the engagement numbers, demographics and such must be an absolute gold mine.

Really, I am stunned when I don't see companies chasing the custom data. It makes no sense. The company I am at now is trapped in 90's as far as internet presence (static website, basically one big ad with vague information, few details, poorly organized, rarely updated, and no social integration). Yet they are trying to market themselves as a leader and innovator. It's ridiculous, really. It's evolve or die, and I can already see moves by corporate to excise our group from the whole. Upper management shake-ups, "restructuring", jamming in new accounts and not really caring about losses to retain or even losses themselves. I just can't imagine the work it would take to actually bring the company into the current market. As it stands, we have a major media corp entering the market, and they will crush us like a bug when they decide the time is right. They have the integration and social presence, their website is sharp, modern and functional. You can control your account's information mostly there (only huge changes need a phone call). It's really just a matter of time before the dinosaurs that still reside over our section get completely axe'd and we get sold.

Basically tl;dr - Start stalking your customers or you will lose them
