1. Build a stadium specifically designed to reinforce and amplify sound waves before focusing them down on the playing field.
2. LOUD NOISESlink is in blue, how appropriate. Smiley: lol
3. ????
4. Superbowl

At least that's more or less how I'm assuming the thought process went. Always knew it was crazy loud there, the kind where you scream because then your ears hurt less. I guess that goes as far to confirming it as anything will. I haven't had a chance to talk the family yet about what it was like (assuming they can actually speak today, which is pretty unlikely all things considered), but that had to be one heck of an experience. Now if we can just manage to squeak out a couple of wins away from the noise box we might actually be able to ride the sound as far as the championship game.

Anyway, an American football thread I guess. How's your team faring?

Don't have a team. Have a day with lots of commercials and even more drinking and heart-attack inducing food in the end, though.

I have't a team. I did notice another segment of another news program this weekend that was devoted to football and head injuries. Add to that noise levels that are 150% of the occupational limit and one must wonder.....

Is American football really that awesome?

Did you catch this piece? Just came out last week and pretty much hits on everything that makes an academic side of the campus hate college football.

Chicago Bears. Off to a good start with 2-0. Both wins eeked out in the final moments of the game. We've got the Steelers next Sunday night; should be a good game.

Vikings are 0-2. Two very tough losses due to how they came about. I get to see them here in Cincinnati in December. I hope they have something to play for by that point.

Out of reverence for my Mom I choose Vikings for a team. Also in my early dating days with my hubby we went to a couple Viking games (in the old outdoor Met Stadium...brrrrrr) as his dad had season tix.

My daughter joined the Roller Derby. She started yesterday. I'm a derby supporter.

Bulldogs in college football, not really that into any of the pro teams.

After reading that SI article, I'm wondering how the Dawgs treat their players compared to OSU. I remember us having a few football players in classes - an intro to media studies, and Portuguese, and one of my Shakespeare classes. I only recall one in a 4000 level class.

Pats will win the division (though Miami looks pretty decent), but I doubt they make any kind of noise in the playoffs.

You sure? Jacksonville could use an extra fan or two. I'm sure they'd be happy to have you.

I'm not sure what's worse: all the wrongdoing they describe there, or that it all doesn't seem very shocking. Whatever they do with football at the college level, it clearly needs some major changes.

Our college didn't even have a football team though. I guess we did once, but they weren't very good, and after someone died after being injured on the practice field several years ago they got the axe. As much as it was nice not to have it around, I did miss the sense of community the games build. Or maybe it's just something to do. The Soccer team was pretty big on campus, but it never generated as much attention. Smiley: frown

Superbowl is a great example of what you can get when you take 2 very good sports teams and use them as background filler in your commercial.

If you think American football is bad you should really stay away from baseball nascar American sports in general. Smiley: rolleyes

As opposed to soccer where you have two teams playing 90% of the game in the center of the field? Just because you don't understand it, doesn't make it unexciting. If you thought football was mind numbingly slow, trying watching a baseball game or a round of golf.

Football's not the issue. All of the sports are. College sports in the US is huge money.

************ soccer, bunch of spoiled whiny twats that earn way too much money for crying bloody murder when someone touches them. I prefer the speed of hockey (field hockey for you), especially since the changes in recent years that have really upped the speed of the game.

How'd we get here anyway? We have minor league baseball, minor league hockey, but no minor league football. Part of me thinks it'd be nice at times to separate the two (athletics/academics) out a bit more.

There are also college baseball teams, for that matter.

Here's how I've heard it described: Football is an "event" sport. Football only runs every week, sometimes every other week, so it can happen outside of big city and still be the "event." High school football tends to have those small towns locked down, leaving the big towns to have their big games, and the mid-size towns - college towns - to the college football teams. At the same time, football teams are larger in terms of total roster because of the risk of injuries during the season, and football is a more demanding sport, meaning there are less players to go around from high school to college to the pros. They also tend to retire earlier.

Baseball is less of an event sport and more of a way of life. The games run almost daily during the season, so they need a much bigger municipality to support them and make enough money from daily ticket sales. The game is less risky in terms of injury and death, and baseball team rosters tend to not have as many backup/relief players. Many young promising players skip college entirely and join the "farm teams" at age 18 as soon as they're out of high school. There are thus more players available for the minor leagues.

Funny enough, the sports we care about only slightly less than football here include, in order:
- Gymnastics
- Swimming and diving
- Golf
- Women's basketball

That has to do with the GymDawgs and the SwimDawgs taking home a lot of national titles and having OIympians on them and stuff, I'm sure.

And that's the bummer of the thing. Not just because it flopped of course, but underneath it all it league was meant to make money (I know heaven forbid...). You have a very lucrative collegiate sports program already in place. You are going to have a hard time pushing aside a setup like that with something that doesn't post the same kinds of profit.

College Football = Life for enough people anyway. Smiley: rolleyes

They've kinda squeaked by in their first two games though. Too many new faces on the receiving squad for Brady to really shine. Unless a couple of players really really step up, they're going to get demolished when they start facing actual strong teams.
