Not to be confused with steel gyros.

If I'm eating lunch late, I go with ice cream so as not to ruin dinner. I'd suggest french vanilla ice cream covered with hot fudge, sprinkled with some spanish peanuts and doused with whipped cream - cherry topper ftw.

In NYC? Hells yes.

[EDIT]

For the record, it's not the best you can get in the city (which is absurdly good), but it's not even on the same playing field as any chain or frozen pizza I've had.

Smaller, with a darker red cover (not the shell, the part that goes over the nut itself.) they taste a bit stronger, and slightly bitter to some people.

It's no gourmet pizza, but it's infinitely better than chain and grocer's freezer. Also, a slice is about the size of a whole medium pizza so there's that, too. I'll go with that today.

If it makes you feel better, one of my best friends moved to Bratislava from NYC, and she's in love with the pizza you can get there.

Also, putting arugula on pizza isn't standard here, which is over there (according to her). I was in heaven the first time I had arugula on pizza...

As for the quality of NYC pizza, it's more like it has a strong skew in the range of pizza compared to other non-chain places. The average pizza place is going to hover around the level of quality for the better places outside the city (obviously excepting areas like Chicago and other cities).

And the best pizza there is going to rival the best in the world (which isn't saying much, since most areas known for their pizza have a distinct style).

But the lows are the same - dominos, pizza hut, etc.

Same for here. Most independent joints offer a cheap slice that's notably better than the national chains but not necessarily transcendent. I'm talking Chicago style thin crust; people don't eat the stereotypical deep dish on the go for lunch.

Is it that big of difference being 30 mins out of NYC? Because the multiple pizzas I've had from 30mins outside of NYC weren't impressive. Meaning, they either suck or pizza here is exceptional. given how most foods in the area of NY I've been in were rather good in the first place, I'm going to assume we just do exceptional pizza here.

And ******* awe inspiring donairs!

I've never had Canadian cheap pizza so I couldn't make the comparison, and if I'm thirty minutes out of NYC then I just take the thirty minutes and go into NYC. I have had it in Georgia and California and wasn't particularly impressed so there's that.

Sorry, if we're talking cheap pizza, then the local cheap pizzas are crap. By cheap, I'm talking the $1 (except it would be atleast $2 here). Good places sell slices that are 1/4 of an 18" pizza and are about $4-5. $1-2 stuff is cardboard.

Yeah, that's basically the premise behind pizza.

There is most definitely variability from station to station. Some are really good and some are crap, but more than that, the time it sits under those heat lamps is what makes or breaks the gas station pizza dining experience.

My morning coffee stop is currently gas station/market. They sell pizza like crazy for breakfast (regular pizza not bf pizza). Their most popular pizza in the mornings is a bbq chix one. If they happen to have a Hawaiian out, I'll buy a piece. Smiley: grin It's not brick oven fired, or thin crust crispy goodness, but it's decent homemade pizza.

In an effort to promote Maine products our Governor recently sent out lobsters along with other fancy local seafood delicacies to all the other state governors (to the tune of 20k taxpayer dollars). NH Governor gave her lobsters and what-not to a local soup kitchen She was my hero that day.

Is it cool our gas stations here are called convenience stores? We all call them Gas Stations, but if there wan't a gas pump out front they would be mini stores.
Anyway... they sell pizza from one. It can't be a regional one, maybe it is... Casey's convenience store. They are all over the place here, almost every town with a population over 600 has one. They sell this craptastic pizza that most around the area enjoy. It has a thick, bready crust and a thin bottom. Comes with a ton of tomato paste and cheese on it (with w/ meat topping you want). I can't really stand to eat it fresh, but let it sit in the fridge for 12hours and it makes for pretty OK cold pizza.

Cold Piazza, do you others like cold Pizza?
Poll Removed: No more than one per thread, please!

Then there are a few Italian owned restaurants. Both have their own pizza, and use their own spices. These places are more like "in the mood" pizzas.

Like the convenience store, subways, and other things you get in every small town around here, there is also a Pizza Chain that seems to be regional to only a small part of South/SW/Mid IL and it is called Little Italy's. I enjoy this place, while it is hit or miss with others. They seem to be the only place that does odd toppings.

There are also the chain placed (Hut, Domino's, etc) but you have to go 20+min (to a larger town hub) to get there.

The STL style pizza is my fav. Super thin wafer crust type pizza. Emo's is the best for it, they also use provolone for their cheese. This seems to make people like or hate it.

At one time I loved and could eat it everyday (because the Turtles did!) and then when Casey's came into my life I found my self hating it. Today I'm really picky about pizza. I'm enjoy Wood Fired pizza and unique toppings.

Now if only I could make awesome gyro, or the nearest decent gyro place wasn't almost an hour away -.-
