I'd play on FFX|V with all the cool kids, but SE ****** up the launch bad. My fiancee never got her early access, so therefore we couldn't get on Ultros when it launched. After that, had more important things going on. We finally got around to playing last night, on Phoenix server. It was a good distraction, especially because she failed hard just trying to move around at first. Not sure why, she is ex-WoW, but it caused lots of laughter.

Well, to be fair, the game defaults to causing you to enter text when trying to use your numeric hotkeys unless you turn it off. Otherwise you have to use ALT/CTRL to access your hotbars. Still doesn't explain why she can't walk. I might have to get her a controller. It could be that SE just made ****** PC controls, similar to how FFXI's controls were always ****.

From what you just posted it certainly sounds like the controls are ****.

Well I remember on FFXI, the mouse would control your movements... by holding the left arrow to make you run in the direction the mouse cursor pointed, right button for camera.

I haven't played the PC, but I know SE's track record. They design with a controller as the optimum control scheme and go from there. FFX|V might be different, but until I eventually download the PC edition, no idea.

I played FFXI briefly on the PC. W, A, S, D, was movement.

Actually initially the numberpad arrow keys were movement. You couldn't even remap them. The camera controls were mapped to the arrow keys. Macros were Alt or Ctrl and the corresponding number.

They may have eventually allowed mapping to WASD, but it was still not an ideal control setup.

If you say so, been a long time since I played. I remembered how much of a hassle it was to setup healing macros. Coming from EQOA, where healing was cake compared to FFXI. Could be why I only played for a couple of months.

Huh? What's wrong with WASD?

I am not sure, but I did hop on my PC and with the default PC controls (not playing with keybinds), they assume you want to strafe, not turn... Which is really damned annoying. Plus SE tends to design around a controller, so the KB/M interface is always needlessly convoluted or somehow inferior. She got a controller, and everything just works much better.

They assume you want to strafe, because the standard in newer MMOs seems to rely on the mouse for turning and camera.

Indeed, they never have managed to chase me off. Now I'm like that weird chair in the corner that no one really wants, but you can't get rid of because there's always some use for it at some point.

That and **** people, I will stay until the admins show me the door.

Yea, Kao and I get on well, so long as I don't go about ******** up the place with spam. He gets enough entertainment banning the Indian spammers these days, he doesn't need me helping. But do keep hanging about, this place needs more quality posters of ye olden times to help train the new lot.

Or weed them out, at least.
