Well, the other side of things is that the face of theorycrafting for games has evolved. WoW reached the point where there was nearly no reason to have a class sticky, sans for beginner stuff, because you'd just be rehashing the stuff written in the Elitist Jerks guides, for the most part. And they could say it better, and were generally solid at moving from easy access to deeper math stuff, so you could understand the reasoning up to the point you wanted to.

FFXI didn't really need a lot of TC, because there weren't a ton of variables. The game also didn't update often enough to make the content management of guides much effort.

Yeah, the number of times we said "go read EJ", or "use the spreadsheet" started getting fairly frequent. Then the number of instances where you'd actually have good reason to deviate from that kind of thing seemed to get less and less as time went along too. Guess the outcome wasn't too surprising looking back. Smiley: rolleyes

As an Ultra-Orthodox Zamite, I still play EQ.

Apropos of nothing, but the EQ forums are reasonably lively and I have seen new posters in there with some frequency.

Hell, it got to the point where you didn't even need much TCing to figure out the ideal build to within 3% of the top DPS potential by yourself. A FEW classes would have major quirks a small bit of logic wouldn't solve.

But for the most part, a BiS talent build meant taking every talent that buffed your major abilities or auto attack at all, any abilities that provided group buffs or running speed, and then the rest didn't really matter.

I remember when I always had OoT running in the background at work... that was back in the drunken BT days, Sora beer send-a-thons, Pinkytopia and jumping in cars with lions. Definitely made a boring job a wee bit more interesting.

No they are all Usagi socks. Remember, for some bizarre reason Zam made him an admin, so he just expropriated a few accounts no one would miss.

They also made Nix an admin at one point.

I get this feeling that someone in the head office had lost a few too many screws. Only worse choice would be to make gbaji an admin...

I'd wager that the only thing that would change if Gbaji were an admin would be that he wouldn't get rated down any more.

I am referring to the WTF factor of someone being made admin. Usagi and Nix both kept behaving the same.

I still find it amusing that Gbaji, being someone with almost 30k posts, one of the most rated people in the history of the site, has never once used the karma button. Not even accidentially.

For all of the admins aside from myself, being a forum admin is a secondary role. Most of them were selected based on their ability to be on the site regularily, demonstrated ability to constantly enter new content to said site, and familiarity with the game they were made admin for. Not everyone is able to deal with that transition. The site instantly goes from being a recreational area where you go to interact and maybe let off steam, to being work. For the content manager admins, that means more time entering items into databases and writing things, and less time posting, and when you do post, you tend to have to self edit more. It's not just that irritated and outraged users can and do send nastygrams to your bosses (people get cranky when they get banned or yelled at apperently) but you also have to begin to self regulate your own action when someone annoys you on the forum. Absolute power corrupts absolutly and all or something along those lines. Some people find they can't handle it. None of us gets paid enough for the hours we put in, and that can start to generate a sense of resentment. Then you get game expansion launches, where people start expecting all of the new items catelogued on day one, etc. Lots of inconsistant stress factors, and very little oversight in some cases until it is too late. It certanly changes your perspective, thats for sure, and you really can never go back. Sometimes the personality types that make the best content managers make the worst forum admins.

Other times we just like to hire crazy people to ***** with everyone's brains.

hehe Kao... never confuse my posts for anything remotely serious.

I've been a forum admin previously a few places, and yes, it does change how you handle things. You know my posting habits well, having seen me here. You'd think someone else used my username on the forums I admin'd. There were no massive posting tears, no snap decisions. I would have actually been viewed as a harsher admin than any on this site, to be honest. I was hard but fair. People didn't like me lots for that, because I was "killing the lulz", but forums need a sense of order, or users bail.

Usagi and Nixnot were actually excellent choices from the community. It would not seem that way when you see how they post, but they were both very aware of what the forums were, where the lines were, and how to handle problem users on the forum. And yes, they did very well in their time. And yes, being an admin is thankless. Very few admins are well liked, fewer still widely respected. It's impressive Zam actually sports so many admins that are, in fact, well liked.

That's because it is too short.

Make it a paragraph and he might find interest in it.

NERF TEH ASYLUM!

I like Usagi well enough but making him an admin was a joke; a bad one at that.

But he got some bennies and self-appointed Guru out of the deal. Good scam on his part.
