That depends on how you look at it. Overall, it's not expensive compared to a full dinner. At the same time, I hate spending $5+ for a cup of coffee, knowing that I could have gotten a full combo at McDonald's. Of course, McDonalds isn't the place to go for dates.

If you REALLY want to be cheap while impressive, cook your own food and eat at a park or some public friendly place.

Picnic's in the park - intimate and inexpensive.

DON'T forget the napkins.

Ugh, I'm happy to pay $5 to know that I didn't have to eat at McDonalds.

$5 for coffee isn't that bad when the overall bill is going to be like $10.

On topic, as I've gotten older (36 atm), I've become more set in my ways and less willing to comprimise. I am what they call a "crazy chic magnet", and while crazy is fun, my patience for it isn't there anymore. So by choice, I go through periods of time celibate. Then the hormones are too much to handle and I find myself a girl to remind me of why I enjoyed my time without one.

This is why I date other men.

After some of the psychos I've met, I'd still ALMOST consider it. Maybe it's just the people in the DC area who are nuts.

Or maybe it's you? I mean, if every chick you date is crazy it might just be something about you that makes em crazy.

Actually, I've said that before. I always tell a good friend of mine that I'm the common factor in my crazy relationships.

Okay, on a related note, re: Coffee Dates. Is it weird for a thirty year old to order hot chocolate on a coffee date?

Not that I'm worried atm. Even if we somehow had the talk today and decided to end it, I'd probably wait a couple months to start dating again out of respect for my roommate(her brother).

Not really weird. Conversation starter, maybe. Especially if it's a flavored drink.

Not weird. Specially as most coffee shops will have some kind of gourmet hot cocoa. But an alternative cheap date could be going out for ice cream. Smiley: drool

It might be something about you making them crazy, or it could just be your definition of crazy is much more liberal than the norm.

Not really, I said coffee date as a more general term for having a drink and talking/getting to know each other kind of date.

All I know is that the hot chocolate at Starbucks sucked last time I tried it.

Ice cream, however...now that's a great idea.

Not Starbucks, find one of those little independent coffee shops and go there. Something new and different or what not.

If you look at the overall bill in comparison, coffee is more favorable. When comparing value, not so much.

Honestly, the thing about dating (and first dates in particular) - if the person is going to be so averse to something like a cheaper date, you ordering cocoa, or <insert other activity relevant to your personality and/or situation>, then they aren't someone you want to waste your time with.

I'm a big coffee drinker, but I'm not going to judge someone for ordering cocoa. If coffee's not their thing, then that's fine.

And the more important part is that I'm there because they wanted to spend time with me. Either they invited me out to get coffee because they know that I like it, and they wanted to spend time with me, or they know the place is great, and they wanted to spend time with me, or they had no clue if the place was good or not, but wanted to spend time with me. Or vice versa.

Really, since the actual activity is more an excuse to have some time together, and possibly to have a conversation starter, what it actually is doesn't matter that much.

It really doesn't matter where you go, but if the person you're with takes issue with what you order then it's probably a good indication to get out quick.

If she doesn't like the fuzzy handcuffs then best she gets out now.

Don't like to go all out on a first date, light bondage play is enough until you get a chance to know someone a bit better. Besides, people run away enough as it is when I come after them with the handcuffs. Smiley: bah
