Confusion about his height also results from the difference between the French pouce and British inch—2.71 and 2.54 cm respectively; he was about 1.7m (5'7") tall, above average height for the period.
While you're probably not wrong about the horse, unless there's an old *** flipbook depicting a young and not well endowed Napoleon trying to make ends meet that I don't know about, it's probably more likely because he was rich and could afford it rather than compensating for something.
