I graduate next fall and should have about 25,000 saved up by then. Thinking of living abroad for a little bit in Italy, or Amsterdam...somewhere in Europe. What do you guys think?

On $25,000? Maybe three or four months.

$25,000 is decent savings, but if it were me I'd keep it in savings and put it towards a house or wedding down the road :P.

Those things may or may not be overrated :) And also, I do things on the cheapsies. I definitely have no intention of blowing all of said savings. Maybe like $5k or something as a graduation gift to myself.

Sorry, Catwho, for hijacking your thread.

Some people are crazy like that.

I became an elementary school teacher for the prestige and fat paycheck. And because I get to shape young minds into whatever I feel like. I'm not saying I've got a hidden agenda, but I'm going to be Emperor of the World in a couple of decades.

Do it. Don't limit yourself, travel around.

The opportunity won't likely present itself again.

Unless he means live as in work as well in which case the opportunity has probably already passed him by. It's a royal pain in the *** to hire a non European worker as a Dutch company and it includes a few months of waiting time while the company and Dutch government look for suitable alternatives to you in Europe.
Unless you work in IT, it's probably not viable to try and work here.

That said, traveling is always an option of course.

Im sure the jobs I would be looking for would have no problem hiring an immigrant and paying me under the table. Im looking for low responsibility

Eh, yeah, no. Especially now with the crisis this stuff is checked rather extensively, unless you want to live here illegally and work in picking fruit or flowers and being paid a wage you can't make a living on while being extorted along with a bunch of eastern European workers. But when you're emigrating here you either have to have a job or you get kicked out again. Low responsibility jobs that don't require special education, forget about it. You're not worth the risk or the effort for an employer.

Americans do have an advantage in immigrating to the Netherlands as you're allowed to start your own business (aside from something law or medicine related).

Denmark as well. Actually, since my degree is in IT from a good university, I've worked in IT for several years, and I speak English, Denmark would let me live there for two years no questions asked, up to three if I bothered to learn Danish. After three years I have to either own a business or get a local job or GTFO.

PhDs have it even easier - speak English or German or Danish, and have a PhD? WELCOME! Smiley: lol

(Plan B if my husband doesn't get tenure next year is to move to Denmark, actually.)

I think you can find those in most of north west Europe. They're pretty much harmless though, all they do is run away fast and even if you manage to corner one the bite is still only about as bad as a bee's sting.

I actually caught one once and posted pictures of it on ZAM, you thought it was a brown recluse then. I still have the pictures in my zam images even!

Yeah, those suckers are all over my parents' house. Ugh.

I remember one time when I was still living with my parents, I caught one of those by placing a cardboard box upside down on top of it. Little ******* started pushing the box around.
