I got to thinking recently. My cat is pushing 15 years old. I think I got him sometime in 1996/7. I've had this cat longer now than I have not had him. I thought to myself, do I value his life more than that of a human's? And I think I do... at least, to an extent.
If someone had to decide between saving one of two people, and they chose to save the person who was a friend/family as opposed to the complete stranger, would you think they chose wrong? And would the same hold true if the friend/family was a pet and the other person was a complete stranger?

On the save two people portion of your question, you either can do no wrong or you made the wrong choice. If you save a friend, friends and family will applaud you but you will get ripped apart by others saying you shouldn't of been selfish and save a friend. If you save the stranger people who don't know you will think you are morally superior because you saved a person without thinking of yourself, but friends/family will feel betrayed. Best bet in that situation is let them both die and say it isn't your right to decide who lives or dies. That being said, ***** the stranger I am saving the friend/family member.
Now if it was a pet or a stranger I would say save the stranger, I love my dog.. but I can buy another.

Not at all. It's just a more extreme version of asking if you could feed just one hungry person and one was your child and the other a stranger, which would you choose? Obviously, you only feed strangers out of what's left after feeding your own family first. We always quite naturally form a hierarchy of support/protection with those around us, starting with those closest and ending with those farthest. It's human nature and there's nothing at all wrong with it.

No. No animal, no matter how beloved as a pet, is worth the life of a human. I might feel sorry for having to let fluffy die in a fire because there was a homeless person who needed help getting out, but I'd get over it.

I'd have to say save the stranger over a pet, even my own beloved pet. I had a cat of 18 years that died almost two years ago now. I wish I could have saved her but I couldn't... and if it came to saving a person or an animal, I'd likely pick the person. That person may or may not live to do amazing things, but I'm fairly sure the cat has no chance to better society.

I think it immoral to choose the life of another species over a human.
Sure, we'll always want to favor our loved ones, but that is more for us individually (ie, I'd feel better saving my own cat than saving some other cat) than for the advancement of the species as a whole.

Do I like the family member? I can think of some that would get saved without question, and others who probably wouldn't.
What's the stranger like? There's a difference between the attractive young blond and the dirty hobo I wouldn't want to touch to pull out of the raging water.
Do I like the pet? We got rid of the cat that urinated on the rug constantly, that wasn't a hard choice.
