This little program, Calibre, lets you convert text files to whatever format you want. I have a nook so I use .epub - notes, highlighting and bookmarking is super easy.

Edit to add, most the readers for the different formats are free programs as well and run swimmingly on a pc (basically nook and kindle programs).
