He's aiming to become the first man to break the speed of sound in free-fall.

He's currently climbing and will drop at about 120,000 feet. (Around 23 miles up).

As of writing this, he's at about 71,000 feet

I just gave it a listen, and the guy talking annoyed the **** out of me. He keeps pronouncing Kittenger with soft G as in "goat". Now maybe that's the way the guy himself pronounced it, but it's not supposed to be pronounced that way.

Watched on the television. It's a shame he pulled his chute so early, not that I can blame him. He still broke the record for highest freefall dive, and we'll find out if he broke the sound barrier.

Would have loved to have the first-hand view from that capsule. Would have hated my options for getting back to earth. Smiley: lol

According to Jalopnik he unofficially broke the speed of sound.

It was a live video stream. It's long over now so there's nothing to see any more.

There's probably recordings of it all over the web though.

The actual free falling portion was hardly interesting. The stuff leading up to it (particularly the view of him on the outside of the pod just before he jumped) was frickin' awesome.

Wait...

He popped the parachute a full minute before originally planned, but according to the numbers on Wikipedia, he was 4.900 feet above ground when he did so. At that altitude he would have been falling at around 170 feet per second (terminal velocity of the average skydiver).

Now, I'm no math genius, but...

170 ft/s x 60 s = 10.200 ft, right?

So the original plan was for him to release the chute 5.000 feet below the surface of the ground? That's pretty ambitious.

The wiki entry has to be wrong. They were hoping to beat the previous free fall record for longest time, but he pulled forty-something seconds before that. There's no way he was at 5k feet. He JUMPED from 120-something K. He fell for something like 2 minutes 30 seconds if I'm remembering the event correctly (and this is ALL off of memory, so my numbers could be horribly wrong). But his peak velocity was somewhere around 800 feet per second. 115k/800 = 144 seconds, or 2 minutes 24 seconds. And that's at PEAK velocity.

So unless my numbers are way off, which they certainly may be, then no. He most certainly didn't pull his chute at 5k feet.

Someone has recreated his jump on a slightly smaller scale.

It's like Nascar. It isn't interesting unless something tragic occurred.

I was watching the stream and the commentator announced that Felix was 5.000 feet above ground a moment after he released his parachute.

According to FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale), he jumped at 128.100 feet and released the parachute 119.845 feet later, which would put him at roughly 8.200 feet when he released it. That's not 5.000 feet, but it's still short the 10.000+ feet they were aiming for. Considering you can't release a parachute one feet above ground, I'd say it was pretty ambitious of them to think that he could fall for another minute before opening it.

Math is hard! Smiley: glare

There are variables to consider. Had he been falling slower he could have fallen for longer. I'm assuming that the statement about wanting to fall for another minute was based on a slower estimate of his rate of descent (at the tail end of the fall at least). Still a pretty darn awesome accomplishment though!

If msnbc are to be believed Felix Baumgartner managed to break the laws of physics and probably went back in time in the process.
