I don't think I have a good idea on what "mid-scale" hotels are. If I go by prices, anything $75 or more is at least mid scale to me
Price is what's going to help you distinguish between hotel tiers, but it's not a set amount. Hotel pricing varies depending on the market it's located in. An economy hotel in one market could be $50, $80 in another and $150 in another one. You can only use price in comparison to other hotels in it's immediate area.

Then never mix brands of liquid egg substitutes and egg whites.

I've actually seen an uptick in the breakfasts at the hotels lately but my anecdotes probably aren't statistically significant. I'm used to "bowl of apples and a couple doughnuts" but have seen more hot food trays (eggs, sausage), waffle making machines, some gizmo that produces pancakes off a conveyer belt and stuff like that. Beats a bowl of cold cereal with questionably refrigerated milk.

I have noticed an increase of "hot food", but it's more of bits and pieces of breakfast. As I said, I'm not a real big breakfast person anyway, so it works for me. I just hate the fact that I have to pay extra to eat at a nice restaurant instead of having some type of "free but really prepaid" coupon for a similar type of breakfast ( 1 meat, eggs, toast and juice). Chances are, by doing so, customers will actually order additional food. I would rather have my money go towards that then maintaining ridiculously sized fish, waterfalls and ice sculptures.

Stay at a full service hotel instead of a limited service hotel. You won't have a free breakfast included in the price in all likelihood.

If you're not sure what the difference is, let me know. It's completely different from mid-scale versus economy as you can have a full service and a limited service hotel both in the mid-scale range.

Having stayed in many a hotel over the years. I like a clean room with a spotless bathroom. If your wanting things like a fridge and a microwave? Internet? Then you need to research the place better. These days most if not all have the said amenities already. But as you have found out some upscale hotels have really pretty things and gyms and pools but no fridges and microwaves. These hotels figure that your eating out all the time. Most have several restaurants in house for you to do so.
I'm going to spend 3 days at the Dallas Sheraton for Animefest. This is what I get for my 109+tax

Coffee Maker
Dual-Line Telephone
Hairdryer
Express/Video Checkout Available
Radio/Alarm Clock
Air-Conditioned Room
Desk
Voicemail
Room Service
Free Newspaper
Refrigerator Available (Charges apply)
Self and Valet Parking (Charges apply)

This is a huge convention center and it has 3 restaurants and a smoothie bar. I'll be eating in each one during my stay.

This is the correct answer. You all could learn a lot from this brilliant woman.

Not me. I have a learning disability.

Thanks for throwing it in my face, Ugly.

I didn't know there was a difference, but the names are self-explanatory. Thanks.

I know there wont be free meals, I just don't see why 4 star hotels just don't include reasonable price meals or coupons with your stay. If I'm not mistaken, the point is to have your guests eat there. If people choose not to eat at the restaurant, then the likelihood of them desiring a refrigerator or microwave increases.

Normally I like my freedom to choose and not have to pay for something I didn't ask for, but if I'm paying that much for a hotel, I want to be able to walk down stairs and start eating. I don't expect anyone to give it to me for free, so include it in my stay like with airfares.

My first job was at a fairly nice steakhouse attached to a mid-service hotel. The hotel complimentary drink at the bar for its customers, up to $5. Trust me, only Alma wants to be the douchebag who proudly bears a coupon for a free bottle of Bud Light.

Only one thing now (it use to be the free stuff): No Bed Bugs.
I ask to see and to inspect the room. Any sign of them, I jet off.

I would totally use that coupon. But only if I planned on staying and having quite a few more drinks. Smiley: lol

A place we stayed at in Kona offered, for five dollars (per person) more a night, a "free" breakfast voucher for the restaurant nearby. You could choose between three meals, the vegetarian meal (fruit cup, cottage cheese, drink), the healthy meal (fake eggs, turkey bacon, drink), or the "classic" breakfast (eggs, bacon, drink). For an extra five bucks, it's worth it, in my opinion. Here in Hawaii, you can't even get a McDonald's breakfast sandwich and a drink for five bucks.

I would use it as a coaster for a better beer.

Why is that? Because it's a coupon? Because it's only $5? Because it's Bud Light? Or a combination of the three?

If traveling through and just looking for a bed, I really dont' expect much, and will go with the cheapest place - Elkhart, IN Econolodge - 39.99/night. Smiley: smile

If I'm staying over for a couple day I'll look for a hotel with an indoor pool - this has always been my dreamiest luxury. Second would be a place that serves a decent breakfast.

Cheap hotels most all have free wifi now. Seems many expensive hotels still charge, but I think they're taking a beating for that decision and are coming around and opening up their internetz. (last year in downtown Chicago, I had free wifi at the Hilton, but across the street at the Palomar my sis was paying $10/day).

Maybe cuz budlight only costs three dollars - you're not getting your full coupon value. Go for the Sam Adams I guess.

There are a number of signs you can look for that make it fairly evident that a bed bug problem has existed for more than a day or two. If it's a recent infestation, I'm not so sure you can verify short of actually finding the bugs.

Generally the upscale hotels have much better locations. You're paying for the location, and people want the location so they strip out some of the amenities because they aren't needed to attract people. The hotels farther out from city centers usually aren't as expensive and have more stuff like free internet / breakfasts.

Well, I don't like beer, so I don't know their prices. I was just wondering if it's because of the said beer or because the use of the coupon. If it's because of the choice of the beer, then I don't know. If it's because I would use a coupon, then that's just silly to not use a $5 coupon on something that costs less than $20.

The best hotel ever is Embassy Suites. All the benefits of the upscale hotels, with most of the benefits of the lower end hotels, for a price somewhere in the middle. The one we stay in at ACEN has free buffet breakfast (including custom made omelets), free happy hour during the manager's reception, and more or less every critical amenity in the book (including a mini kitchen.) They've pretty much spoiled me for any other convention hotel.

On the road, though, I consider a hotel adequate if it has a soft bed, a full bath (hate shower-only hotel rooms), and doesn't stink to high hell.

So, the other day I had to reluctantly stay a night in another city and pay for a hotel. After a few reviews/prices of hotels, I had two choices, 4 star hotel or dirty low budget hotel. Since I've been doing the latter on my "Tour de Asia" and probably again during my "Tour de South America", I decided to stick with a "reasonable priced" 4 star. They gave me a room for $129 + a billion in taxes.

Now, when I got to my room, the room was spacious with a nice bed and TV, but I had no refrigerator, no microwave and no free Internet. As I took the glass elevator down passed the water falls that lead to "very large" sized swimming fish, I learned that I also didn't have any continental breakfast in the restaurant sized dining.

Now, I wasn't too upset because I see this all of the time in so called 4 and 5 star hotels. The cheaper hotels tend to have the refrigerators, microwaves, free breakfast and the free Internet. The 4 and 5 star hotels tend to have the ice sculptures, large lobbies with nice furniture, waterfalls and other cosmetic features.

What do you care more about?

The higher rated the hotel (4-5 stars, 4 Diamond, etc.), the less you get for free. This isn't because the luxary brands want to rip you off, it's because at a luxary hotel you're also paying for the service. A luxury hotel has a doorman, bellman, valet, front desk agents/mangers, concierge, room service staff etc. while a budget hotel a desk agent & maybe a manager?

For example, budget hotels have coffee makers in the room. Luxury hotels don't, because they sell coffee in house & via room service and it tends not to be instant. This pisses off budget minded folks that got their luxury hotel via priceline, but the regular clientele (who's most likely going to be a business traveler who's company is paying for the room) expects it.

I don't own a hotel, but I've been working in hospitality in the Boston area for 12 years, most of which has been in boutique-luxury hotels.
