Everyone loves a good ol' sad thread.
We have to take our dog Spencer for his last car ride today. I managed to not go in to work so I can hang out with him. He's probably the best-behaved dog we've ever had. Never got into anything he shouldn't have, aside from chasing and getting sprayed by more than a couple skunks over his life. He turned 11 back in May, and over the past couple months has been on some medications to slow the progression of some cancer. One of the issues with these types of treatments is that they also wreak havoc on the immune system, and he recently got an infection in his foot that is spreading like wildfire. He can't walk around on his foot, and has mostly refused to eat the past two days. You try to rationalize to yourself that he knows it's time, too, but really that's a silly thought to ease your own pain.
Boxers don't typically live longer than 8-10 years, and so you tend to start thinking of every extra day as a gift, and that's all well and good, but I still have to take my best friend to go die today, and it really @#%^ing sucks.

Those are beautiful pictures Spoon, and it sounds like you and Spencer have had a great life together. That is something you can always reflect on. It's not easy to let them go though, and having been there a few times myself I cant even begin to think of the right thing to say.

Sorry for your loss. Pets are in most cases part of any fanily they are in. It hurt when my cat passed on not long ago.

Those are some wonderful pictures. I bet you the puppy is just as heartbroken as the rest of you, looked like they were such good buddies.

It's almost terrible to say, but once we knew it was coming, I was just kind of hoping we'd have a fun day, and he'd go to sleep on my bed, and I'd wake up in the morning and he'd've gone in his sleep. Having to shoulder the responsibility of doing it this way can feel so soul-crushing, even when you know it's best.
We didn't get to do much as he's just not very mobile. Just hung out and watched some TV, while trying to make sure the pup didn't jump all over him. If there's a silver lining, it's that I don't get to be sad for long because the puppy is a handful and a half. She's about 18 months old, and just has so much energy.

I'm sorry. His name really fit, he looks like a Spencer to me, if that makes any sense.
And I agree that boxers are the best, I had one living with me for 11 years. One day, about a week after my mom passed away, Maggie couldn't get up off the floor. The day before she was literally jumping up onto a three foot high wall out front. I took her to the vet and he asked that I leave her for a couple of hours so he could take X-rays and what-not. I drove about 30 minutes to work, got out of my car, and got a call from him. Maggie had passed. I've always found it odd that I didn't cry when my mom died but I got back in the car and bawled when Maggie did.
I've had a lot of dogs living with me over the years (you don't own them), and losing Maggie was the toughest but, at the same time, I was relieved that she didn't suffer for very long and I didn't have to go through that awful experience you just had.
By the way, Maggie was a brindle. White boxers are pretty rare, but there was one a few blocks away that Maggie found quite "attractive." I'll bet Spencer was a real ladies' man.

*hugs* Soul-crushing is a good term for it. It hurts so much, but you know it needs to be done because its going to hurt them even more terribly, physically, if you don't. Poor Spencer.
It's so hard, but you can take comfort in knowing that it was time. I had my dog Hawkeye for over 17 years, he was a gift from Santa when I was four and my dad brought him home and said "This is what you get when you're good girls." My whole life I was aware the day would come that he would pass, but he lived for such a long time. I moved out, and eventually got my own dog. A couple months after getting Butters, I took him to get some booster shots, and while I'm in the veterinary office I got a call from my stepmom. Hawkeye wasn't doing too well, had gone really downhill since the day before, and she was thinking that she needed to take him to be put down, to the vet, 30 minutes away, where I already happened to be for a routine visit. I waited for her to arrive, and actually considered it a privilege to be there with him at the end of his life.
I suppose I believe in reincarnation, and the way my German shepherd has a white patch growing in to the black saddle on her back just the same size and shape that Hawkeye had a black spot on his white back makes me wonder if I could be that lucky. Even if not, Dexter is a wonderful wonderful dog and I can't imagine my life without having either of my pets in it. I guess it really is cliche but you just have to be happy that you got to be with him while he was alive, and hope that maybe you'll see his image again in this lifetime. Time doesn't necessarily heal all wounds but it does put them in to perspective.

I went to the vet the day we put Clyde down, and was in the room with him til the end. It was odd, my head filled with every sad song ever while it was happening. The vet was doing her best to be consoling, and said "just remember all the good times you had with him."

We had another boxer, Baylee, who was a year older than Spencer. We had to have her put to sleep last year in May. Spence was pretty despondent after that, and we didn't think he was going to last a more than a month or two. We ended up getting the puppy, Maddie, and they were pretty much best buds up until the last month or so when he couldn't really play with her much but she was still trying and was a bit rough with him. They'd still lounge around together, but when she wanted to play, he'd go hang out in the dog crate so she couldn't bother him.
I've always had boxers since I was little. Our first dog, Yoda (hey, it was the 80's), was brindle, but he's the only brindle boxer we've had. Spencer's ear was brindle but I don't think that really counts.
