"Survey approved, 8-6-2012 ~ Administrator Kaolian"

Hi all, I am looking for participants for my research project. I've noticed through a search this comes up often, but I hope this is different enough to encourage you to participate. It can be lengthy depending on your response to how you are associated with griefing, expect an average of 20 minutes to complete. Now the details:

Thesis Title:

Causes, Magnitude and Implications of Griefing in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games

medusa.ballarat.edu.au/limesurvey/index.php?sid=44463

My name is Leigh Achterbosch and I am a candidate for the Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Ballarat, Australia. I am inviting you to participate in a study about the act of griefing and its implications in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). This is one of many invitations posted on various MMORPG and online game forums.

This research will explore the following questions; what are the causes and implications of griefing in MMORPGs, and what magnitude of griefing exists in this genre? The intention is to contribute new research and knowledge about griefing and its sociological impact.

The study will involve an online survey for participants of the ages 16 and above. This survey will cover your experiences as a griefer, a victim of griefing, or witness to the acts of griefing. You are invited to participate by following the link medusa.ballarat.edu.au/limesurvey/index.php?sid=44463 and completing the questionnaire that will take approximately 20 minutes of your time (You can save and reload unfinished surveys should you require). You will remain anonymous by completing this survey. The online survey will remain open until an appropriate sample size is collected. I will repost here when the survey has closed. At some point in the future when data has been collated and analyzed I will repost with some preliminary results in this forum thread.
I would like to thank you up front for any time you allocate towards this research endeavor.

Yours sincerely,
Leigh Achterbosch

I'll fill out your survey if you guarantee me that you'll send a spider to Kao. Oh, and send me a kangaroo.

Answered.

For the record, however, you really should've had "enjoyment of the game" as one of the reasons that people play MMORPG's. Just sayin'.

Do I have the right to withdraw at any point after submitting my survey? How do I contact you to do so? Will I be fully debriefed?

So at some point, you have to say what things you think are considered griefing, and then later on you have to say which forms of griefing you've been subjected to. I'm confused at this point, because I've been subjected to some things on the list that I don't consider griefing. The question asks "have you been subjected to the following manners of griefing?" so I really don't know how to answer for the ones I don't consider to be griefing. "Have you been subjected to the following actions?" would have been a bit more clear.

Something like that. I was a little confused about what it was that we were considering griefing. The distinction between competitive game-play and hostile behavior seems to have a grey area of sorts.

EXACTLY!

How the heck are these "Doctoral" students forgetting this stuff. I learned that crap in undergrad (which makes me lean towards doing research that doesn't involve humans like meta analysis)

Someone has a bit of an ego. You're a data point, get over yourself.

That's probably generous, seeing as this will get likely spammed on 6-7 different boards. Maybe something more like slightly less than 1% of couple of data points that someone draws a line through and uses as evidence to support a narrow-minded theory on eggplant mating rituals or something.

Or something...

I don't have the exact figures, but it feels like about 33% of all new players who join my Minecraft server do so for no reason other than to try and disrupt the game for others or deliberately damage things that aren't meant to be tampered with.

When they fail to bypass server protections, they infiltrate player made "factions" and grief them from the inside. My ban doubles in size every week it seems.

I will answer some questions, in the initial Plain Language Statement it says "You will be implying consent to use any data you provide as you progress through each question." Now most likely I will NOT use data from unfinished surveys as it doesn't tell the whole story, but if you have hit submit it is entered into the database and you have implied consent to use your answers.

Furthermore the statement explains "When analysis is complete, the authors shall provide a written summary of results which can be obtained from the same location in which you obtained access to the survey. If you have any questions, or you would like further information regarding this project please contact the student researcher Leigh Achterbosch, or the Principal Researcher, Dr Charlynn Miller of the School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering – University of Ballarat."

As for

You are right I should have stated the second line of questioning as "which in-game actions have you been subjected to". I did run multiple testing phases of the survey and a few things were changed, I wish this was picked up on during testing, as some respondents have disagreed that it IS griefing.

.

fuck it. I'm just contacting your HREC. You should know better. This is a brilliant idea for a study but the ethics regarding human subjects STILL NEEDS to be followed.
