How does military school system work?Follow
How does the military school system work in the US? Are they allowed to recruit their own graduates into the military before the age that they recruit civilians off the streets? If your family sends you to military school, are the military able to requisition you into the army without your consent while you are still underage?
It's basically private school, and they can't force you to continue into the military after graduation, while underage, or against your will.

Is there actually anywhere where a military can do that to someone in military school but is unable to do so to someone who isn't?
It depends on what you mean by military school. If you mean West Point, the Naval Academy, ot the Air Force Academy, I believe you still need a letter of recommendation from a U.S congressman or some other type of political pull to get in. When you graduate, you are obligated to serve 5 years of active duty and 3 additional years of reserve duty. In special cases, like for star athletes (David Robinson), the active duty will be commuted to a longer stretch of reserve duty.
If you were talking about other types of military colleges like VMI or The Citadel, they are just like other private universities.

Those schools are a special case, though. They're there with the express purpose of training officers for the armed forces. They're more like boot camps with more focus on education than actual schools. Career training, paid internship, whatever we want to label it. I think Ari was more asking about high school and below schooling, but I could be wrong.

Yes, I was asking about high school and below military schools.

A lot of public high schools also have ROTC programs, but students who participate in that are under no obligation to stay in the reserves, or to transfer to active duty. In fact, my sister who was one of the star ROTC cadets in high school (she inherited my mum's sharpshooting skills) was rejected by the Navy because of chronic depression.

Military High schools (some go down to 7th grade) are private schools in the US. They are run in a military style of discipline and structure. There may not be any affiliation with the US military at all. Most do run a JROTC program, but it is not a requirement. Military can not sign them up before the standard age of assent nor can they be drafted with out a standard US draft. They are not getting payed to go to military school. (Other way around they are paying to go to the school.)
ROTC at the college level is different in that it is an official US military program. The ROTC members have signed a contract with government to pay for schooling return for military service.
Cadets at military affiliated schools (Citadel, VMI, VPI, Texas AM) are not required to be ROTC members and may just be going through the cadet program for some reason or other. (head to edit that a few times)
JROTC program which is the high school military program can be summed up as band practice with nicer uniforms. It has no auto military service and gets you entry into the military as an e3 instead of e1 if you want to enlist. It also makes you the second favorite target for drill sergeants.
