What is your opinion about game research?Follow

This thread is being set up just for my own curiosity, just to see what everyone thinks about surveys and game studies in general, and is not part of any official research project.

Is game research:

1. Vitally important to future game design.
2. Interesting, but not really that important.
3. Mildly irritating.
4. Absolutely annoying.

We choose to opt in for betas. As long time regulars of these forums, before they became "Zam" (some even came from the UBB days) we've had a multitude of "surveys" thrust upon us. Every single one has the same broad topic. No one has appeared to do any background to see if their idea has already been tested.
No one posts an IRB with full disclosures; if they want us to take them seriously, they need to take their research seriously...

the worst ones are those who think Chi Square is a Mortal Kombat move.

I personally believe there is a lot a research that can be done using games and the internet, particularly in addictions studies and developing therapeutic techniques.

Honestly, I'd be intrigued on just getting some legit follow up as to just what our feedback said, as well as what, in particular, the study was about, for when they're those silly "you can't know more than basic vagueness or it'll **** up the results" studies, which is a perfectly sound reasoning, but a huge killer to incentive to give a ****.

I agree with Jinte. I like knowing how they will test it. Sometimes being too vague can also damage the results.

I haven't seen any of the past "zomg do mah survey for mah class" folks ever post their data.

There's also the matter of how most people who want a survey of gamers and ask here are either A) people who lurk here and suddenly need a large number of people for a survey for some class, and just realized they ****** up their deadline, or B) are of the variety that feels that no truly intelligent people (like themselves) would actually lower themselves to posting on a gamer forum on the internet, so they have that obnoxious holier-than-thou air about their posts, and that continues if and when they attempt to "blend in" with the community and "get accepted as a regular" to get more people to take their survey. The latter are actually more annoying and painful to watch, because a fish out of water is a fish out of water, no matter how you dress it up, and it makes me think of the various studies I've read where the researcher(s) decided to immerse themselves into the world they were studying so as to better comprehend it (such as, for example, the various studies done by sociologists on NY and LA gangs), only the researcher in this case has absolutely no idea wtf they're doing.

The results of the survey that I have posted in the other thread will be shared on my research site once the data is compiled. If anyone is interested, I would also be more than happy to post an update here about the results. If you have questions about the study, please ask and I will do my best to answer. Smiley: smile

I voted Smiley: madx3 because any game research done online using free polling sites probably isn't a game I'd want to play.

According to ethical guidelines(at least in the United Kingdom), you're supposed to be fully debriefed after partaking in a study. You are to be told you have the right to withdraw your data at any time and what the aim of the study is. If you don't your research is thrown out.

Internet questionnaire types don't do this.

I cannot see a reason why study information should be withheld, especially in game research. That said, one of the challenges of survey research is that in some cases (like my current survey), the researcher does not know who the participants are. That is the reason that I have set up the final page of the survey to direct everyone to the site where the results will be shared as soon as the data is analyzed. As far as withdrawing from the survey, all you have to do is close your internet browser. I can't speak for all surveys of course, but that is how mine is set up.

And if, for instance, I wanted to withdraw after the fact? After I had completed your survey?

edit: My girlfriend studies Psychology. Here's an example of a debrief sheet they have to use 'cause of the ethical guidelines and such

Quote:
Debrief – Attitudes and Perceptions Study

Thank you for your participation. This sheet is designed to give you some further information about the study.

Alongside official explanations for everyday events, other explanations often arise that can be called “conspiracy theories”. For example, the official explanation about Princess Diana’s death is simply that she died in an alcohol-related car accident. However, conspiracy theories implicate MI6 and the royal family in her “murder”.

In this study, we examined the extent to which beliefs in conspiracy theories are associated with power and creativity. Some literature suggests that powerless individuals tend to believe conspiracy theories more than those high in power. Other research suggests that low power individuals tend to be more creative. We examined these relationships and also the extent to which creativity is associated with beliefs in conspiracy theories. Power was measured by two scales examining sense of control. Creativity was measured by two different perceptual tasks. We predicted that there would be:

1. A negative relationship between power and conspiracy beliefs such that low levels of power are associated with high levels of conspiracy beliefs.
2. A negative relationship between power and creativity such that low levels of power are associated with high levels of creativity.
3. A positive relationship between creativity and conspiracy beliefs such that high levels of creativity are associated with high levels of conspiracy beliefs.

(Replace with your own aims and hypotheses)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us:
(Name and email address of researcher named on information sheet).

Thank you again for your participation.

If you have any serious concerns about the ethical conduct of this study, please inform the Chair of the Psychology Research Ethics Panel (via the Psychology Office) in writing, providing a detailed account of your concern.

Yeah that sounds pretty much exactly like any IRB I've had to do (the exceptions being when my research involves public records and not any living contacts)

imo, it really depends on the individual survey. We've had a few well written surveys pop up, but most of them are downright insulting. I think it could have the option of being important to game design, but none of the ones I've ever seen seem to be that critical or noteworthy. But just for the record, I didn't look at yours in the WoW general forum.
