Lost an old friend the other night.

Around nineteen years ago. I was working on a 65 GTO for someone. It was sitting in my driveway and that morning it was cold wet and raining out side. February in Austin can get cold at times. Walking outside in the morning I could hear a cat crying. It took me a bit to find where it was coming from. It was under the rear of the 65. The car was up on jacks so I took out my creeper and rolled under the rear of the car. It took me a few moments to locate the crying and I carefully reached up and pulled a little grey kitten from on top of the rear differential. Taking him in side I dried him off and warmed him up and fed him. Arrgh! Another abandoned cat! Welp After a few weeks Zippy earned his name by running around all the other cats bugging them.

As the years passed and the other cats died. Zippy became one of the fixtures on my computer desk and always slept on my bed by my head. It was rather annoying to roll over and breath in fur at times! Zippy stayed with me when I moved from Austin to Bastrop and then to Giddings. Sadly he was wasting away when I made the move to the new place in Giddings. I figured he had a few weeks left and he lasted two. I tried feeding him more soft and better food but he didn't eat much of it. Yesterday he began to cough up dark blood and I knew he didn't have long. I took him outside and let him sit in the grass in the shade most of the day so he could at least enjoy the outside once in his long life. Later when it got hot. He decided to lay in the hallway and I left him there. Soon I had to sleep and this morning he had passed away.

I called my friend and she came over with a shovel and I dug a hole under the big oak tree behind the home and I buried my old friend. I'm still sad at his passing. We all know that our time comes and we cant say no. It will be some time before I consider getting another cat. I still have two left and Cassandra is getting rather old also. Maybe when she passes I'll get that Maine **** cat I always wanted. Until then its Cassandra and Yoshiko (Kun) as my pets.

Zippy in his usual spot.

19 years is a long time to know any friend. Congratulations on having him in your life. When you're ready for another one, you'll know. RIP Zippy.

RIP Zippy. My cats know that sleeping in front of the monitor will get them tossed right onto the floor, and yet they do it anyway....

Bummer.
19 yrs seems like long life for a cat.
Side note: It has been almost 3 years since he got hurt, I'm shocked my cripple dog is still alive. I must be doing something right, because he keeps on keeping on.

It's a natural transition. Desk cat had to break the glass ceiling at some point. Now he'll just watch you **********.

My cat is almost 1 year old now, I really hope he'll be with me for another 18 or more years. And it sounds like Zippy had a pretty damn good life considering his chances when you found him. Smiley: smile

Thanks for the support people. Zippy's good buddy Yoshiko (Kun) has been walking around the house crying for two days now. I'm certain that hes looking for his good buddy. Zippy and Kun used to always play together. Kun and Cassandra really don't get along very well. Many times I've had to chase Kun out of the room after he started fighting with Cassandra. Thinking about Zippy still brings a tear to my eyes yet. Maybe in a few weeks things will improve with the cats and myself.

Sorry for your loss. I've always had cats, and it's never easy when their time comes.

I can't imagine losing a companion you've lived with for so long in your house. Slept with you in bed, hung out with during the day/evening. I know a guy who couldn't bear to talk about his cat after it died. Smiley: cry

RIP Zippy. Smiley: frown I'm so sorry. I still think of my old Gizmo passing away awhile ago and my 3 legged cat has not adjusted well since his passing. She has become so solitary and stays away from the other 2 cats that sometimes I wonder whether I should re-home to a single-cat family, but she's my 13 year old baby.

I'm very sorry for your loss. In 2010, we lost our Spooky cat after 14 years due to a fast acting illness. We had adopted her from the SPCA when she was just a few weeks old. It was a tremendously difficult time for us to lose our furry child. We did adopt 2 more kittens later, but Spooky will always be our number one cat.

I wish you the best, and lots of cheek rubs from your other cats.

Spooky
