Oh wow I have been so out of the loop around here. I had no idea you moved away. Glad to hear things are going well for you.

I'm currently in Japan right now. I'm out of the Navy now and am doing disaster relief work in the Tohoku area. I'm now making plans to study in Tokyo.

:D

Elaborate more! If things work out the way I want them to then after another year of school I'm going to try to get into the JET program or another English teaching program in japan. I'd end up spending a year in japan if I got in.

Not to put a damper on this, but TEFL is really competitive, lots of employers rip you off and you can't get with the good ones without a relevant degree (are you getting that?), preferably postgrad, and ideally experience. Especially for popular countries; South America and Korea seem to be good starting points and you can move up/on from there.

I also know that it's the only (paid) way for many of people to go abroad, so it's not per se a bad option, but I think that has more to do with the fact that there's a lot of "hurr durr, I want to move to this specific country there no matter what it takes" rather than "I'm gonna look for work and decide on location if I have an actual choice".

No, seriously, tell us how Japan is doing one year later.

It's hard to gauge how far along the areas are getting as far as clean up goes. There is still lots of rubbish all over the place. A good amount of the large things have been cleared out and put into piles around town. It's moving really slow though. The info I have gotten so far is that the ground dropped and in some areas the tide comes back into town. One area that this happens is the fish market in Kesennuma. They had to build the barriers higher due to the tide coming into the factory.

Due to the ground dropping there have been no rebuilding policies put into effect that will last up to 2 years wile the government decides what they are going to do. If any rebuilding is to be done, the ground has to be raised back up and this is a city wide problem.

Soggy, how do you fund doing relief work? I'd love to do that next year, but most of our projects are really costly to participate in and it might just be cheaper to go to Canada or something.

I'm volunteering with an organization. I also have quite a bit of money from when I got out of the Navy.

Not really sure on what to do about teaching English. All I know is the British guys I lived with in Tokyo were lawyers in the UK and had about 3 jobs in Tokyo to sustain living there.

But what I do know is Japan is a wonderful country.

Wow, I'm really behind! Congrats Belkira! I remember when you posted that you were thinking about doing this, and I'm really glad you guys took the leap! It must be amazing. You should post some scenery pictures to warm us all up here on the mainland. :)

Here's a picture of one of the huge like XBox sea turtles that I petted. :D There's this (freezing cold) beach where three or four of them hang out and they do these large, lazy circles and will swim up to you and look at you with their huge, black eyes. I think one of them tasted my swimsuit at one point, and I started rubbing their heads when they came by. I think they liked it. Smiley: grin

Also, FINALLY, we have made arrangements for my sweet little puppy dog to officially begin life as a Hawaiian Malti-Zhu. She arrives in our city on May 4th. I am so very very excited to see her again.

Oh man. Well, good thing that the sea turtles have been hanging around to keep you company while your puppy has been gone. What a heartwarming reunion the two of you will have.

I for one support a filming of the reunion. Nothing is better than an ecstatic puppy.

Smiley: lol You guys are hilarious.

Guenny, I took it as being sincere, no worries. I can't wait to see her. And tomorrow I'll head back to Sea Turtle Bay (all names of places have been changed to protect the innocent turtles) and visit with my shelled friends.
