Johnny Walker: Black Label. Accept no substitute gorram it!

Also, if you're going to get Gin, make sure it's London Dry. We may not have decent food in the UK, but f*ck me if we don't make awesome alcohol.

What for mixing? If so I'll second gbajis recommendation for Skyy.

I'm a little confused. Do you and your husband have separate bank accounts? You really have it broken down that he buys food, you buy liquor, etc? Just a crazy concept to me and not in the realm of my current functioning.

As far as booze goes, I don't drink anymore myself, but I know good rum is a little difficult to find. Ron Zacapa is a good aged spiced rum that's a little fancier than Captain. Also, I'm not sure if you can get it everywhere, but Absinthe is always fun, with a little more investment in hardware. Otherwise, any other kind of anisette is always kind of fancy and different, if you dig that sort of thing (I don't).

I'm curious, what do you guys think of UV or Three Olive for mixing? Both brands come in plain or a multitude of flavored vodkas, and I've had decent shots / mixed drinks made with both.

Is it A: not ****** and B: cheap (and C: unflavored, but that's an extension of A, really.)?

Then it's good for mixing.

A bit higher up, but in the ballpark you can make infusions.

Top end vodka seems like a bit of a wasted pursuit to me, but I know a guy who has like 50 bottles of really high end stuff in all manner of skulls, esoteric Russian artifacts and the more traditional bottles. The only explanations I can think of are either he /really/ likes the taste of the void, and/or he's some kind of soviet era spy.

I'm just not very picky when it comes to liquors for mixing. The only flavored vodka I buy is Stoli Razz. Otherwise, for stocking a bar, I'd stick with regular liquor and flavor the drinks with other ingredients. Buy the flavored liquor if you're making one particular flavor drink enough to warrant it.

Grey Goose is my choice for vodka. Then again, I don't really drink a lot of vodka.

London Dry is good for mixing. With Tonic water, at least. Gordon's is pretty good.

I had some top shelf Polish vodka once. Ice cold, it didn't taste that much different from water, except for the shivery burn of alcohol on the throat.

Beer is becoming sort of a non issue. The local (super awesome and huge) package store installed a growler shop in the back. Now, getting fresh craft beer is cheap and easy.

Skyy is vodka, London dry is gin.

Also, I have to disagree with Nilati on both gin suggestions. They're not bad, just ok. Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray are both better, imo and at no real cost difference.

I have had a few of the UV flavor vodkas and have liked them. Their cherry one taste like cough syrup.
Forgot about it, but I also own some crystal skull vodka, and it was nice. Nice enough that I put it away and forgot about it until tlw's post.

Absinthe is fun, in the states you can get Lucid brand. However if you don't like jäger you probably won't like absinthe.

Is there a brand called "London Dry"? I thought it was just the type of gin. For example, Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire are both London dry gins.

I was thinking of Beefeater, but said London Dry, because I'm a noob.

I defer to Ugly's suggestion of Bombay Sapphire, though.

Beefeater is a well gin around here. Saying that though, it's often tough to upsell a premium gin as Beefeater is popular.

I'm a fan of Bombay. If you start getting into G&T though it's worth it to explore some of the different high end gins like The Botanist and Hendricks. I like the different flavour profiles.

Grey Goose is awesome if you want to pay a lot of money for a mediocre vodka.

I'd go Belvedere for something widely available. I could name others but I'm not sure if they're available nationwide and without the large Polish population of Chicago.

Skyy might be good. I used to drink it in college. But then I also used to drink McCormick's in college that that was $5.99 for a half gallon plastic jug.

I've got no idea on half of these brands. Then again I may have had EU onry stuff that you guys don't have. Swings and roundabouts!

The good news is that I recognize almost all of these brands, and they're almost all midshelf around here, which is what I was looking for.

Our current sad half bottle of bottom shelf vodka is Burnett's... the bottle is plastic.

When I was in Canadaland in the LCBOs, one thing I noticed was a conspicuous absence of the cheap rotgut so prevalent in package stores around here.

Oh hell, our local bottle shop has a pretty nice website, actually.
