Yesterday I was out with the wife at the movies, When I got out I turned my phone on, I had calls from people I didn't know and 3 of my cousins. I called the one I am closest to, she told me dad died. Me and him were not as close as we could of been but it hurts. Now I have to deal with everything that comes with losing a loved one. My aunt flew down to Florida to take care of him and start working on clear out his stuff. I will find out tomorrow if I am going to go down to help. My dad was a bit of a hoarder, luckily not the piles and piles of trash kind. He collected mountain bikes and music gear. He has a massive collection of guitars we need to clear out. My dad's legacy is pretty much the contents of your average music store. He was an amazing guy, not the best father in the world but what we had will never be forgotten.

He had posted a vid earlier in the day of some band he was watching play outside, went to get a coffee and dropped of a heart attack right in the middle of the shop. He was 62, acted like he was 26 hell he even would ask girls in their 20's and 30's out on dates, He was a pimp, he was my dad and he will be greatly missed.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I would hope you have a trusted and competent family member managing his estate. There is much to do on the financial side and it can be a difficult situation for anyone unprepared or in that position for the first time.

My aunt, his only sibling, is going to be handling it, sadly this isn't the first time she has had to do this and I do trust her completely.

My best wishes for your family. It doesn't matter if you were close or not, he was still your dad and it still hurts. Just remember the good times and dwell on the positive.

So he wasn't good at parenting, and that's probably left with you with some scars and pain. But he sounds like he was a really interesting guy in other ways, and you can be proud of him for that.

Your dad may have been a collector, not just a hoarder. If your aunt can possibly get his two collections properly evaluated by a professional, there might be some stuff in there worth some money. Or if you aren't interested in getting top dollar, some stuff in there that would make a precious gift to the right person.

Even old beat up stuff can be worth a lot, having even more value than if they have been "incorrectly" repaired. The original item can then be correctly restored by a knowledgeable expert.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Make sure you try to keep something that you thought was really cool and represented your Father. I never had that opportunity when my Mother died and all I have are a couple of pictures.

Ari- It wasn't that he was bad at parenting, its that my mother didn't allow him to see me until I was 15 so I didn't have the closeness that a younger child would develop with a parent. And he was bit of both a collector and a hoarder ;).

Tailmon- Yeah I will, my aunt has already pulled aside and packed up the one thing I really want which is my grandfather's trumpet which is the one interest that all 3 of us shared.

lolgaxe- I was avoiding the name of the shop but ding ding ding.

I wish I had the appropriate response. He sounds awesome in a way. Hope you get to know him better in the years. :)

He was awesome in a way, He did a small radio show in the Boston area for a few years on Monday nights, played a bunch of his original music. Worked as a regional manager for Guitar Center for years and made friends with pretty much everyone he met. Honestly the only person I had ever heard say anything negative about him was my mother. Recently he was doing work as a music tech on the set of "rock of ages". Music was in his blood and sadly the music stopped... I can't believe I actually typed that.
