I'm saying I don't understand what point you're trying to make with that point. We're talking about weight loss, right? I'm saying that there doesn't appear to be any substance to the "if you eat right before sleeping, you'll gain weight" theory.

So, your metabolism slows down while you're sleeping...okay, I'm with you so far. Now, what's the consequence thereof? It doesn't appear to be weight gain, from what testing has shown. There's unsupported conjecture suggesting that you'll get fat, based on the things that you guys have said, but that science hasn't supported that theory. Perhaps one's slowed metabolism during sleep also means/coincides with a slower conversion of food to into fat cells? I have no idea.

I mean, you guys are suggesting a thing that happens...that's fine, but I'm not seeing how it's tied to a relevant consequence.

Yes. While you're sleeping you're burning less of the crap in your body, and what isn't burnt off gets stored for later use. You want to limit how much your body is storing, and in fact want to burn off what is already stored through eating less calories and forcing your body to use up it's stored supplies. So take in less when your body is doing less, and more when it's doing more to maximize the amount burned overall.

You also shouldn't completely rule out treats for yourself, either. My coworker (who also works as a personal trainer) recommends that her clients have one "sin meal" a week - go ahead and have the fast food for lunch, or go out to a cocktail party on saturday and graze away on niblets. One quickie burst of extra calories a week will keep your body from getting too complacent with your reduced calories the rest of the time, and help prevent a metabolism slowdown.

Also, if you know you're allowed to relax your vigilence at least once a week, it becomes easier to stick to the reduced calorie foods throughout the rest of the time. (Just plan ahead - don't give into the brownie impulse on Wednesday when you know you've already got dinner plans on Friday.)

FWIW, I seem to recall that:

Protein for breakfast, carbs at lunch, fruits and veggies for dinner.


Not just, but weighted toward.

I would suspect that if true, it's because even though the calories you eat before bed do get converted into fat cells while sleeping, you potentially convert that fat right back into energy during an overall calorie deficit.

Timing of eating should only be decided based on how it affects your overall basal metabolic rate, IMO. Now there is the potential that allowing the conversion to fat and then burning said fat could have a negative effect on that, so it's something that can't be completely ignored.

While I tend to agree that smaller meals at night are a reasonable idea, it's also relevant to point out that the longest gap in our meal cycle occurs while sleeping as well. That somewhat offsets the whole slower metabolism thing while sleeping.

IMO, it's a good idea not to eat a "huge" meal right before bed. But it's not necessary to have a huge meal for breakfast, medium for lunch, and small for dinner as some have suggested. IMO, unless you are engaged in heavy labor, eating a huge breakfast regularly is just as bad an idea. Most of us don't work in the fields all day anymore, so that's kinda not going to work either.

Best to have balanced meals spread out throughout the day, and even small snacks in between. Get your body used to regular calorie intake relative to calorie consumption, and it wont go into "save energy as fat for later" mode as often (or as much).

My old math teacher is selling cucumbers from his garden down the road. I'll snack on some of those after lunch while at work. I bought a bag of them the other day.

The only time I feel hungry now is around 3:30-4pm while I'm still stuck at work for another 2 hours.

Some folks have super fast metabolisms and can burn through a sheet cake worth of calories walking up a flight of stairs. The con being they'll always be skinny. It's probably just because you're 23 and have never been a fatty though. Sadly you will probably have to start paying attention to calories in the next few years. Smiley: frown

I guess my point is that throwing weight gain/loss (or lack thereof) under the broad umbrella of "metabolism" doesn't really explain anything. If I asked why do things fall to the ground, the answer isn't "physics"

Maybe I'm just grumbling because I'm a biochemistry major.

Based on family history/genetics I should of started getting fat around 16-18, not that I'm complaining too much.

When troubleshooting it's important to always use a known good. Eating healthier and smarter is definitely the first place a person should venture to lose weight. If that doesn't work then it's time to look into other causes. No need to jump ahead without good reason.

Not if he's ectomorphic. Smiley: grin We ectos have it easy, except when we want to get buff.

After two years of doing as little workout as possible and eating and drinking the unhealthiest stuff, I'm finally starting to notice a shift in the fat:muscle ratio. Getting a bit of a beer gut, but I imagine it'll go away now that school's started and I have to walk an hour a day.

It's a body type.
Basically the skinny and thin people who don't seem to get fat (and have a hard time building muscle).


It works well for me.
