Nick, MTV, Comedy Central, etc...

Seems odd. It's scrolling across the bottom of my TV right now. I have Charter so it's not affecting me, but I wonder what's up.

Charter here too, but frankly, even if I was with Time Warner, the only channels I'd miss were CC and Nick.

Ya, MTV and VH1 (And it's spinoffs) aren't a huge loss.

But it includes all the Nick networks, including the higher channels that show the older cartoons.

I have TWC and I'm not too worried. Viacom wants them to raise the rates on those channels, which I bet they don't want to do because they've rolled out this new price lock plan where you can lock in a lower rate for services if you subscribe for 2 years. So if they raise rates they can't raise my bill to compensate.

Reminds me of the Wal-mart - Mastercard ordeal.

One of them will fold eventually. Even though I think Wal-mart still refuses Mastercard Debit Cards used as Credit Cards.

I saw that this morning and am glad we don't have TWC. My kids would miss all the Nick stations and I would miss Spike for UFC.

My kids watch Disney if they watch TV at all. My most watched channels are Discovery, History, National Geographic, and Science channel. Not sure if any of those are Viacom or not but I haven't heard them mentioned.

What Urks me is that TW is also Dumping lots of local stations over the fees they are charging. I think TW is slowly pricing themselfs out of holding the cable monopoly.

FTFY. The spelling doesn't bother me as much as the random capitalization. Just capitalize the first letter to be on the safe side. It's not brain science.

LOS ANGELES – "SpongeBob SquarePants" might get squeezed off Time Warner Cable.

Media giant Viacom Inc. said its Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels will go dark for 13 million subscribers at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if a new carriage fee deal with Time Warner Cable Inc. is not agreed upon by then.

The impasse would mean "SpongeBob" and other popular shows like Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" and Stephen Colbert's "The Colbert Report" will be cut off on the nation's second-largest cable operator. Time Warner Cable primarily serves people in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas.

Viacom has asked for fee increases of between 22 percent and 36 percent per channel, or a total of $39 million more, an amount that could increase customers' cable bills, said Time Warner Cable spokesman Alex Dudley.

"The issue is that they have asked for an exorbitant increase in their carriage fees and their network ratings are sagging," Dudley said. "Basically we're trying to hold the line for our customer."

Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew disputed the figure, saying Viacom requested an increase in the very low double-digit percentage range.

Viacom said the increases would cost an extra 23 cents a month per subscriber. It said that Americans spend a fifth of their TV time watching Viacom shows but its fees make up less than 2.5 percent of the Time Warner cable bill.

"We make this request because Time Warner Cable has so greatly undervalued our channels for so long," Viacom said.

"Ultimately, however, if Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV and the rest of our programming is discontinued — over less than a penny per day — we believe viewers will see this behavior by their cable company as outrageous," Viacom said.

Time Warner Cable's Dudley said Viacom rejected his company's proposal to extend the contract while the sides continue to negotiate.

Instead, Viacom appealed directly to Time Warner Cable's customers, with TV ads in major markets. In Wednesday's New York Times, the company ran a full-page, color advertisement with Nickelodeon's animated bilingual heroine "Dora the Explorer" crying and clinging to her monkey pal, Boots.

"Why is Dora crying?" the ad asks. "Time Warner Cable is taking Dora off the air tonight!" The ad urges viewers to call Time Warner Cable and demand that their favorite shows remain on the air.

If the shows go dark after midnight, Time Warner Cable will send people to the Internet to catch episodes. Dudley said the cable operator also will make available a video teaching people how to hook their computers up to the TV to watch online shows — a tactic it used during a contract dispute with broadcaster LIN TV in October.

Part of the disagreement is that most of Viacom's popular shows are rerun on Web sites where Viacom collects advertising revenue that it does not share with Time Warner, Dudley said. "We don't think that's fair," he said.

Viacom has staked much of its revenue-growth prospects on its ability to extract higher carriage rates out of its cable and satellite affiliates despite an ad slowdown and weak ratings.

In the third quarter, media network revenue, which accounts for about two-thirds of Viacom's total, grew 6 percent to $2.1 billion, despite global ad revenue falling 2 percent, largely because of double-digit percentage growth in affiliate fees and the success of its "Rock Band" video game.

Viacom shares rose 45 cents, 2.3 percent, to $19.71 in late morning trading Wednesday. Time Warner Cable shares lost 39 cents, 1.8 percent, to $21.37.

The channels that would be affected are: Comedy Central, CMT: Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, and VH1 Soul.

I didn't realize LOGO was a Viacom channel. I thought it was part of HBO or Showtime's line up.

This is where Viacom fails. In a world where cable companies have been consistently jacking the price of service for decades at a rate of $0.10 to $5.00 a year, another $0.23 increase would be noticed by the customer and the blame for the cost increase falls squarely on the blame of the cable company, whether it is indeed their fault or not.

Rather, I think customers will see this standoff as Time Warner defending its customers against yet another exaggerated price hike that puts more money into Viacom's executives' pockets. I see Time Warner being the one on top here, not Viacom.

According to the sites though, Time Warner's already flooded with customer complaints.

Viacom's complaints are fair, in terms of business.

Sure, MTV may not be at the top of the list, but Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and Spike TV I'm sure are.

Nickelodeon is 2008’s No. 1 basic cable network, drawing the largest audience in its history.

I think it will be close. Viacom is already ahead of the game because they were able to air their side of the story first to the people who watch their channels. And they have been fairly constantly.

While Time Warner isn't the best out there, I am totally against Viacom and what they are doing. If they are asking for a 22-36% increase per channel, and those channels are suffering from low ratings, then TW has every right to refuse. Nickelodeon and Comedy Central are probably the higher rated channels out of the 19 listed...heck I don't know anyone who watches MTV anymore because years ago it strayed from pure Music Television and became Reality Garbage TV (I'm looking at you "The Hills"). VH1 has it's "I love the _____" Series but other than that I can't find anything amusing on that channel either.

I wonder if Viacom will pull this same crap when their contracts end with other carriers?

Viacom is probably getting more money from the other Carriers already.

Nickelodeon is the highest rated of all basic cable networks in 2008, not just the highest of Viacom.

Viacom's shown the data, TW just wants to focus on the crappiness that is MTV and still get the good channels like Comedy Central and Nickelodeon for lower prices because of it.

Time Warner's the one that locked their customers in at lower rates. They should lay in the bed they made now that their sources want an increase in price for their increased program ratings.

If your local gas station gave you a deal where you could be locked in at 1.75 a gallon for the next 2 years, and the oil company wanted to sell it to them 4 months later at 2 dollars a gallon. The gas station would be pissed cause now they are going to lose 25 cents for every gallon of gasoline they give you. But it's not the oil companies fault.

Well since Viacom seems to be charging on a per station basis, TWC should just drop MTV+VH1 and all the spinoff channels and spread the rest of the left over channels, and everyone wins.

LOS ANGELES – Time Warner Cable Inc. says it has reached a deal with Viacom Inc. on carriage fees, avoiding a blackout of 19 cable channels including MTV and Comedy Central.

The two sides, citing disagreement over fee hikes, had threatened a damaging blackout at midnight that would have cut off shows such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "The Colbert Report" to about 15.7 million subscribers.

Shortly after agreeing to extend a midnight deadline by an hour, Time Warner Cable spokesman Alex Dudley said the sides agreed on a new contract.

Details of the deal were not immediately available.
