Help me settle an argumentFollow

#1 Nov 08 2007 at 6:10 AM Rating: Decent
Where I live it falls typically between 40 and 60 degrees at night.

I turned the heater on at night to a massive 75 degrees when it was 62 in the house, and my roommate through a fit.

After the argument, I got to thinking, is 75 degrees all that unreasonable? We both work nights. He isn't ******** about the temperature, but rather the bill following the use of the heater.

75?! Wow, its been ~30-40 here and ours is set @ 68.

Its not that bad for the house to maintain 75 when its 65+ out but once the temperature drops below 40 your heater will be on a lot more often.
#3 Nov 08 2007 at 6:15 AM Rating: Decent
I meant that the heater was set to 75 when it was 62 in the house.

Admittedly, I've had a few Negra Modelo's in me (it's my Friday and I work nights), so I my point may have not gotten through efficiently enough.

I believe in setting the temperature at a low setting and then either throwing on an extra sweater or throwing on a blanket. 75 would be way too warm for me and my polar ice blood.

I don't know much about energy conservation, but I would bet that setting it to 70-72 instead of 75 would save you some, and still be quite comfortable (my room is always kept at 69-72, and it works great... I never see the bill though, so idk if it's bad or good).

In Lemoore CA, the temprature during the summer and even in the fall seasons, regularly goes over 100 degrees.

Oh its 62 in the house, well yeah thats a little cold but isn't 75 a little extreme? 69 is a good temp, comfortable and not much of a problem for the furnace to hit the temp and maintain it.

I've never understood the mentality of people who turn the heat up over 70 in the winter, then keep the air conditioning down below 65 in the summer. Are you just trying to be contrary? Are you ever happy?

You need to live in the Central Valley for a year, then you'll understand. But hey, don't take my word for it, ask Nephy.

I'd probably be turning on the AC still then. When I lived in Calgary, where it gets to -40 C regularly during the winter, I was notorious for opening the patio door in my 2nd floor apartment because everyone around me had their heat turned up too high. It almost made it comfortable.

I never turn it up over 68. I usually don't turn it on at all unless the inside temp is below 62.

Ok, I just converted your 75F to Celcius. That's almost 24C. That's a comfortable summer day up here. Wuss.

You and your metric system can go to hell! Don't you know all Americans are afraid of the metric system in all its forms?

75 seems unreasonably warm no matter what the season. But, at least in the summer, you can be warm for free.

I keep the winter thermostat set to 68 during active hours and at 62 at late at night and during working hours.

Keeping with Fahrenheit, I set mine to 59 and regularly find myself either turning down the thermostat or opening a window because although comfortable temperature wise, its a little "stuffy".

I leave my windows open during winter, unless I have company coming over. Summer time, my electric bill multiplies 20 fold because my A/C is always running. Of course, I am quite hefty.

It's more accurate though! Well, unless we start using decimals.

So's the metric system. When we finally get swallowed by the US, I'd like to see you guys take on the metric system and we can adopt your ancient Fahrenheit
