Those dangerous old ladies should be tased because, you know, they're dangerous n'all.

Taser an old lady or be hit with a hammer.

Yeah, I'd zap her as well.

This story would be so much better with video.

And if John Kerry were present.

A granny shouting "Don't taser me, bro!" would be an instant classic.

When they're schizophrenically swinging a hammer at people yeah, they are.

What would your alternative have been for dealing with the situation (that wouldn't have resulted in a higher likelihood of breaking her fragile bones?)

Seriously though, we seem to be having all kinds of rallies and demonstrations against police brutality around these parts lately. The Chicago police have a particularly nasty reputation.

this was just on the news here.

The way it was told here was her door was left open, and some people walked by and looked in to she her Holding and swinging a hammer.

Cops were called, and when they couldn't get her to calm down, and put the hammer down (she was still inside her house) the pulled the ol' zapper out and made her **** her self...

And then they said a family members where totally shocked the po-pos would do wha tthey did due to her suffering from schizophrenia and dementia.

I've never seen either of my grandmothers pick up a hammer to hammer in a nail. For crushing ice, swatting flies, getting a dresser drawer to close, and various other similar uses, yes. But never for a nail.

Edit: Speeling.

Wow.

Just Wow.

She's 82... you could just, I don't know, grab the hammer from her? Honestly WTF were those officers thinking?

I agree. Aren't most peace officers taught disarming techniques? It isn't like she was an able-bodied person or that big of a threat to begin with.

Why teach disarming techniques when a taser will do it for you?

I talked to a cousin of mine a few months back when he was involved in a simalar incident:

The Tazer was the best choice of action for the cops. They could have done more damage to her with a disarm had she chosen to resist. (Most likely she would have) You may or may not know, but a broken bone for an elderly person is like another nail in their coffin. It takes so much for them to heal at their age, it allmost is a better idea to just say "Here let me shave a year or two from your life"

Breaking her dominate arm, a rib, her hip, or her leg. Are all likely to happen during a disarm/takedown. When an old person breaks one of those, its goodbye - independance, hello - long term care.

Because disarming techniques don't necessarily release the bladder of the victim.

Quite honestly, an elderly woman that suffers from schizophrenia and dementia should already be in long term care. There is no reason a woman like that should be left alone. If you haven't seen what dementia does to someone, then don't even try to argue this.

Cops always have to walk into situations that they have no idea how it will turn out. Tasers seem a far reasonable safe guard to use than say brute force or guns.

Let the cops do their job, I fear a schitzo old lady with a hammer more than a cop with a taser.

BTW, thinking old people are harmless is pretty stupid. I use to work in a home for the elderly, and new workers always learn the hard way. Watching a person in their 20's storm out of a room with a broken nose because they tried to force that "old" person in the room to change their depends or what-have-you.

Back anyone into a corner, and they become dangerous.

Because when you taser an old woman, she floats delicately to the ground like a feather?

Demented old woman with a hammer. How difficult is it for one officer to position himself in front to keep her attention, while another sneaks up behind and disarms her without forcing electricity through her body or causing her to collapse? Not very fUcking difficult. How much fun is it? Not as much fun as zapping the crazy old bicth, apparently.

Zapping an 82 year old is going to cause her to drop like a ton of bricks, that's more likely to break bones than pulling the hammer out of her hand. Not to mention what that voltage could do to someone that age. It's one thing to get shocked at 20 it's something completely different at 82.

It's not exactly hard to get a hammer from an 82 year old woman. Assuming this isn't superwoman of course. Heck, just wait her out if you don't want to take the risk, she'll wear out a lot quicker than any of those police officers and it's not hard to avoid the hammer, she can't be that quick.

If she had a gun I could understand it, but a hammer? Come on. If she was younger, yeah, use the taser because she's probably a lot faster and more dangerous.

I don't what you're all complaining about. That jolt of electricity is probably the most excitement she's had below the waist in 20 years.
