I never would have thought that any culture/country could allow such a Barbaric and inhumane practice to occur. And not just once! Its an Annual event for them!

Quote:
In the Japanese fishing village of Taiji, fishermen are rounding up and slaughtering hundreds and even thousands of dolphins right now.

After driving pods of dolphins into shallow coves, the fishermen kill the dolphins, slashing their throats with knives or stabbing them with spears. Thrashing about, the dolphins take as long as six minutes to die. The water turns red with their blood and the air fills with their screams.

This brutal massacre — the largest scale dolphin kill in the world — goes on for six months of every year. Even more shocking, the captive dolphin industry is an accomplice to the kill.
Link is here for more extensive information

Japan is the only country in the world that still rapes the oceans without any controls, they try to hide it, side step it, deny it. They kill the Great Whales with reckless abandon, slaughter Dolphins, catch sharks just to cut off their fins and then drop them back in the ocean, alive. Their complete disregard for anything else on this planet except for themselves is contemptible in the extreme.

I know you were kidding, but sometimes I think they're closer to sane than a lot of other countries.

At least they see dolphins for what they are despite the higher intelligence. They're fish. They might be classified as "aquatic mammals." But in the end, they're seafood just like the rest of the critters they're swimin' with.

Japan does do an exceptionally ****** job at oceanic conservation and undermines the efforts of other nations to preserve species. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot that can be done for it since they blow off any rebukes.

To be fair, the reason we don't eat dolphin is because it's endangered. If it wasn't we'd be just as quick to pop a can of Turkey of the Sea and toss it on some bread with various condiments.

Considering they are the only other animal on the planet to have sex for recreation besides humans, I tend to give dolphins a bit more credit than the rest of the animal kingdom.

Quote:
Many tuna species associate with dolphins, swimming alongside them. These include yellowfin tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean, but not albacore and skipjack. The reason for the association is believed to be the avoidance of dolphins by sharks, which are predators of tuna. Swimming near dolphins reduces the likelihood of the tuna being attacked by a shark [2].

Fishing vessels can exploit this association by searching for herds of dolphins. They encircle the herd with nets to catch the tuna beneath [3]. The nets are prone to entangling dolphins, thus injuring or killing them. Amidst public outcry about this, methods have become more "dolphin friendly", generally involving lines rather than nets. However, there are neither universal independent inspection programs nor verification of "dolphin safeness" to show that dolphins are not harmed during tuna fishing. According to the Consumers Union, this gives little credibility to the claims that tuna is "dolphin safe".

Wiki

During the public outcry, some nut jobs were claiming that dolphin was included in your can of tuna.

Food chains, naturally speaking, are sustainable. Hunting dolphins (or whatever else) to the point of collapse can't be excused away with "the food chain" while keeping a straight face.
