I'm not putting words in anybody's mouth. Every single time I legitimately ask someone what makes them attracted to anime, the most common answer is "it's like cartoons, but for grownups". I'm just quoting the response I always get. And @#%^ you too. Smiley: nod
And every time I hear a non-gaming adult talk about video games, they mention they don't have time and they are just for the chilluns anyway.

Seriously, who cares?

I will give you a different response.

The main reason I watch anime is am I more likely to find a better story than in what live action has to offer. This has a lot to do with the process leading up to production. Anime are usually adaptations of successful manga or novels, whereas most American live action shows or cartoons are written straight for tv. While shows like House or heroes may be entertaining, they are sorely lacking in proper character development and plot that comes from more story geared writers.

Most American shows also tend to follow an "episode of the day" (such as standard family sitcoms) format or at best episode of the day with small tie ins to a small overarching storyline (most dramas like House, Scrubs, or Law and Order). In contrast most anime view much like a novel. There is a definite beginning and end, as well as rising and falling actions. Episodes are like chapters, so while the end of an episode may sort of rap of that segment, the story pretty much picks up where it left off last time.

What you described is a perfectly valid reason for liking a particular series. However, most people I know that are hardcore anime fans don't like it simply because it's different; they like it simply because it's not American Japanese, a quality I find rather unconventional, and quite frankly, dumb. I guess deep down, I just hate Japanophiles, which most Anime fans are. I don't understand unconditional fascination with a culture outside your own on a level that Japanophiles typically display, and yes, ticks me off, in a way.

Nah, I really couldn't care less about anime, it's mostly your hatred of something really... mundane.

And those are what we refer to as Japanophiles.

Most people laugh at them. You're not alone.

The great thing about Japanophiles is that you can sell them a moldy sandwich of something with the Katakana for "SUPER WATERMELON MILLIARD FILMORE" burned into it with a home-made laser and they'll pay top dollar for it.

My room mate Heather makes tons bootlegging Bleach and Naruto to the Japanophiles who play DDR at our local arcade. Her first language is Japanese, and she had some friends back home who send her the episodes as soon as they air, and she charges these kids 30$ a pop for a CD that costs her like 20 cents and an hour of her life to translate.

She makes, I kid you not, all of her rent money and thensome in just one trip doing that.

I would learn Japanese (well, I want to learn it anyway because I'm a sucker for learning languages, period) just for that.
