Pretty cool. The system is called SUICA. It's used to pay for trains in Japan and can be used to pay for food/kiosks at said train stations too.

The blog I was reading: http://ubiks.net/local/blog/jmt/stuff3/

But the wikipedia is probably clearer:

Hmm, that video is actually the mobile phone version that was just introduced. They review charges on their phone and pay their balance with their phone bill instead of having to recharge it. So basically he's using his phone to pay for a bottle of water...

We are getting a version of this in Australia very shortly, and I can't wait.

The system at the moment is disposable tickets that you buy from ticket machines (not people). This wouldn't be a problem, except that on trams and buses the ticket machines don't accept notes, only coins. I always forget to keep enough change in my purse for public transport (so I risk on-the-spot fines for traveling without a ticket).

Australian coinage is extremely heavy (curse you resource-rich continent!) so I try and carry as little of it as possible.

In the Netherlands we have a system called chipknip, that is a sort of prepaid chip on youre ATM card that you can load up with money and use for vendor machines also.
Thirteen years after its introduction and it isnt a hit or widely adopted, people use it almost exclusively for parking meters and nothing else, mostly bc parking meters in the cities dont accept change.

For vendor machines, lose change is still the easiest option because it doesnt require you load money and everyone always has some change for a soda in their pockets.
And if youre wallet gets stolen except for the paper money and change thats in youre wallet you also lose the amount loaded on youre ATM card.
