Fitness freaks and MMOs!Follow

Hey, anyone else a nutrition and fitness freak like me and find that MMOs are generally counter-productive to your fitness efforts?

Well, on the plus side I find that I am less likely to snack on bad foods whilst playing FFXI, because I'm too busy partying to eat!

It's harder to motivate myself to go to the gym sometimes, because I want to go home from work and play FFXI right away! But, I make myself do it anyway- makes up for the rest of the time I'll just be sitting on my butt all night. ~.^ Alixana still gets way more exercise than me though, with all that running around she has to do in Vanadiel...

Yes, totally off-topic but just wondering if anyone else struggles balancing all that stuff. Seriously, my workweek goes: wake up, work, gym, shower, FFXI, sleep. Repeat x5.

1)Find a part of your MMO that is a simple task that can be repeated easily (crafting or fishing or any melee job 'cept thf in ffxi).

2)Mount Laptop to front of treadmill.

3)Feel the burn !

Edit : sonofabitch, kao. great minds like alike I suppose. ;)

I used to play DDR a lot in college. It's pretty fun, but I'm not good enough to tackle past the normal 9 footer songs so I gve up.

And don't worry, I said work week, not weekends. I do have some semblance of a life, you know. :P What twenty-something doesn't have a boring work week?

I guess I could do sit-ups while party seeking, maybe some jump rope or burpees while on the airship...instead of leveling my enhancing skillz.

No, you can play FFXI with a DDR pad. Try it.

I still go to the gym 6 days a week for an hour and a half, I wouldn't call myself lazy. But, while I'm at the gym doing my cardio and what not, I tend to zone out and think of what I'd like to accomplish when I get home before bed. It actually makes the time go by faster, cardio can be very boring. =/

I think the biggest struggle is the weekends when I am home during the day and motivating myself to go to the gym before evening festivities. Sunday is usually my day off from working out, though.

I only bring this up because the misconception is that "nerds" aren't "athletic". I'm also female, so that skews the sterotype even more, I think. I find it interesting. I'm just wondering how other people balance work/school, being active, and gaming since they all require so much time. :P

No seriously, You as an athletic female should use those running legs to get far away from us internet stalkers as fast as you can. OR stick around and be guru in the shortest time ever conceived. Your choice.

Protip for running if your using a treadmill: read a book.

Protip for those using a treadmill: Run outside, with a friend.

Makes it way more interesting.
#13 Oct 30 2007 at 6:45 PM Rating: Good
Heh, treadmills are boring! I prefer the elliptical or the arc trainer for indoor cardio. Too intense for book reading. =(

As for outside, I live in Florda and for about 80% of the year it's too damn hot to be outside. Now that autumn is approaching (still isn't really here yet, has been hot lately) I'll try to incorporate some soccer playing into my weekends as I used to in college. The tough part will be getting my nerdy male friends motivated to do so. Only one of them is fitness-oriented such as myself, and undterstands what I mean when I say I'm going to "go level up my dip skill".

I also take martial arts, so don't get any ideas about me being some waify barbie doll that goes to the gym to meet guys, or I'll kick someone's ***. Hell, no. >_>

I don't mind the exercise bike though, too bad I can't hook up my laptop near it and play FFXI while I bike ride!

Edited because I didn't want to make another post.

If I can read a book while running 8 minute miles or less, you can read a book on a trainer. But most don't like books these days of course. Plus what martial art? I'm at a kinda higher level of judo (purple belt) its always interesting to hear what other people are taking.

As far as time, I work a part time job as a manager, do homework for my last year of my degree, go to school, read a book each week, run, and maintain a social life. Then if I get a good fill of all those, I'll play FFXI a bit.
Sometimes thats a lot. Most of the time it isn't.

But if your main objective is to play FFXI, you'll never have any time to play anything else.

It is designed to consume all your time. Its why most people don't play it.

Hmm, perhaps I should have put it in a better manner- I don't like book reading while exercising. Perhaps I am bad at that sort of multitasking, but I prefer to listen to music to pass the time. :) So, definitely conduscive to FFXI strategizing! I also lift weights as part of my regimen, but that would be pretty much impossible to do while playing FFXI. So, no matter what I have to make gym time. :)

I have been playing MMOs pretty much full-time time 2003, but kind of got out of my fitness routine until last July. In college I basically played soccer and the gym eveyr once in a while. Now that I am working, my schedule is much more rigid.

Oh, and I take Kung Fu twice a week...Northen Shaolin style.

I read a lot too, I have a bad habit of doing this while playing FFXI because you end up sitting around a lot. Currently re-reading Ender's Game, which is an awesome book. :)

Seriously my dilemma would be solved if my gym hooked up xbox 360's to the TV's. ^^

Edited because I suck at spelling.

Like you said, spending your downtime in FFXI is a good way to keep yourself in shape. I don't play as much as I used to, but when I was playing in an addict-like fashion, I often used the time inbetween parties or events to do pushups. Now that I've slowed down a lot, I often find myself just constantly running. I would run in the morning, but I am way too retarded when I wake up (Get your jokes out of the way.) to do that. I run before I go into work. I run when I get home, I run before I go to take a shower.

I'm in excellent shape, mostly due to soccer in my high school years, and instead of getting fat and lazy like the rest of my old team mates, I hung onto my body. My wife thanks me.

Edit: Also, don't stop posting here. You seem real nice, and that's a welcomed change to the normal pace.

Yeah, I'm 23 now and I figure I'd better keep my good habits alive or I'll pay for it later. ;-) I think being proactive with my downtime will help a lot, too, as you said. Situps, pushups, purpees, crunches, heck I even have small free weights in my room I could utilize during all that party downtime. :P

So we've talked about exercise but whatabout nutrition?

I find it easier to stick to my nutrition goals, actually, because I don't feel tempted to snack much when I am busy and I have a lot of healthy foods that are quick and easy to prepare. I eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones, and when playing FFXI before I'll log in I'll make sure everything is ready so I can just go AFK a moment and get my food when I need to. Or, that's when I'll have something small and already ready, such as yogurt or perhaps my favorite snack, peanut butter and celery. :)

Some people don't worry too much about nutrition but I think it's very important. I only really eat whole stuff and I have noticed such a difference in the way I feel, and an improvement in my workout routines. ;) People say gaming means they can only eat stuff that's "quick", but I think that's an excuse. It takes 2 seconds to get two tablespoons of peanut butter and a few stalks of celery. Or, another good idea is to make a big pot of soup and just have that warm on the stove for whenever you get hungry...I have done that before. :)

To be honest, I don't care about nutrition. I only care about my body to a certain point, and that's where I draw the line. I'm not one of those people who is into fitness because they think it'll give them longevity and ease at certain aspects of life, I'm in it because I enjoy sports, so it came naturally to me.

Now, I only keep it up because I honestly have a problem with obese people; not the fact that they're fat. No, that's fine. Being a little overweight is A-OK by me. But the people who are grotesquely obese honestly do make me sick. (I believe Stubs posted something about this a while back, I can't remember. Someone can searchability it for me, that'd be great.) I feel that I should at least resemble what I would want people to strive for. You know, the golden rule, do unto others...

My wife, however, is very nutritious, and although she hates the fact that I won't eat the way she does, she doesn't give me a lot of crap about it because unlike her, I exercise. When she decides it's time to cook healthy, I order in just to spite her. I guess it's my way of encouraging her to bring some fitness into her life.

Hey guys! I'm a nineteen year-old nymphomaniac who plays WoW and loves to work out. Sometimes, I get so sore that I just want someone to rub my shoulders and maybe lick my nipples. My *** is perfect, I mean, I carry a picture of it in my wallet. LOL, that's embarrassing to admit, but it's true. Wow, that's be funny if it were true, weren't it? I think I've established that I'm an athlete, not some gutterslut. God forbid a female talk about fitness on a forum, because then she's just looking for attention, right? Women...play sports? Just like they play...video games? INCONCEIVABLE

But, thanks for clearing that up for me. Oh, and the rate-downs are nice, too. Clearly, I am spreading atrocities in this forum by discussing health and nutrition...oh noez! Give me a break. Assertive "************* such as myself are almost never anyone's "dream girl"...reality check. Don't worry I prefer it that way. See, and I was even being nice until the sarcastic comment!

Anyway, back on topic.

Zachary: I eat healthy mainly because obesity, heart disease, and high cholestrol run in my family. Seeing as I want neither of those afflictions when I get older, there's no better time than the present to "eat right". I think the mistake many people make though when trying to be fit is not eat enough protein (women especially). A big part of my diet is making sure I eat my weight in grams of protein every day (pretty easy to do with lean sources like egg whites and chicken); and a woman will never bulk up like men do unless she starts taking 'roids or something. O_o But yeah, there's so much chemicals and crap that goes into our food, that even though I obviously can't avoid it ALL, I can at least be proactive for now. :)

Araxius, my good friend is a bit like you...a skinny guy who is a couch potato, used to eat McDonald's every day, and NEVER exercised in his life. Recently, he made the decision to turn that around...I think seeing me do it inspired him. Now he goes to the gym and hasn't eaten McDonald's in months, and has filled out a bit. He jokes with me though...a few days of eating "bad" and doing nothing but playing FFXI, and he loses weight. :P

Now I'm hoping my otherfriends get tired of waiting for me to get home from the gym every night to party and maybe they'll become inspired too (yeah, right). In college I had friends to go to the gym with, but I don't really locally anymore. I may start up pick-up soccer on the weekends or something, just to get outside.
