The Mom With $135,000 In Credit Card Debt Who Spends $400 A Month On Starbucks

Quote:
"I love new clothes. However, I like getting rid of the clothes just as quickly to go buy new ones."

This lady who appeared on Oprah lives the life of a big house in the burbs, new cars, six beautiful kids, and spending way beyond her husband's $5,000/month salary. Felice drops $400 a month on Starbucks, $240 on tans and manicures, and her children have no health insurance.

"I have six kids and I sell their toys sometimes just because I don't like them."

When money runs dry, as it often does, she takes out cash advances. She handles the family finances and hides receipts from her husband underneath a baby blanket in a drawer.

"When I do shop, I do kind of get a rush. It makes me feel good... but afterwards, though, I get depressed. I'll buy something even if I really don't like it because I have to come out with something."

On page 5 you learn they're on the brink of being totally financially destroyed with $135,000 in credit card debt, $1,700 a month for three cars, two mortgages at $685,000, and are two weeks behind on their mortgage payment. Before you make Felice out to be the totally baddie, the husband is just as culpable for not asking more questions and making sure the numbers add up. He even says that he would get credit card bills and not know where $10,000 of it came from.
Suze Orman's solution for them? Sell the houses and cars, move to Seattle, and for Mom to get her *** a job. Perhaps at Starbucks, since she likes it so much and they offer health insurance to part-time workers.

Her husband didn't bother to say, "Hon? How that f*ck do we afford all of this?" Thankfully they are going to be destitute because there is no way in hell they are bailing their asses out of this.

Shopping addictions can get pretty bad. It's a wonder that they haven't repossessed most of the stuff.

You know what pisses me off--unless the laws have changed, she can just declare bankruptcy and have really bad credit for 10 years. She can get lower rates. She can renegotiate.

I'm stuck with my huge student loans with the higher rates b/c I consolidated in the late 90s before rates went down. For 30 years.

Mhm, it's not so much that they're "stupid" all the time. A shopping addiction is just like any other addiction, except.. like a gambling addiction.. it can ruin you.

I had to counsel one of my chick friends through bankruptcy about a year ago due to her addiction. She sees therapists twice a week and still has to have her keys taken away from her so she doesn't spend what little cash she has at the mall.

It's ridiculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to liquidate your assets upon declaring bankruptcy? I mean, you can't just keep all that stuff and leave your creditors with squat, I don't think that the courts would allow that.

It depends on the details of the case. You would be surpised what Bankruptcy courts let fly beneath the radar. They also have to pony up info on all their debts for them to be considered under the bankruptcy umbrella. If a debt appears after the bankruptcy has been imposed, the consumer owes that debt to the fullest and cannot be forgiven under the law.

I've managed to stay above water since getting married and moving away from home. I just can't even fathom how one could fall that far into debt.

I like to have a little more faith in the court system. Hopefully the Judge will look at this and force her to liquidate everything that she doesn't need to survive.

My mother would often take us shopping and, when we see something we like or she wanted something, she would take out a credit card and say, "Don't tell your step-dad about this."

I always hated that. I vowed that I would never ever be like that. If I wanted something and I had to stop and think about whether or not I could afford it, I wouldn't get a credit card without my husband knowing and charge it up.

Only about $100k of it is what's left on my house though. I've stopped using credit to purchase things so I can have it all paid off by hopefully the end of '08. If my financial plan works the way I have it laid out, I should be debt free by December 29th of next year.

Minus a bit on my house, of course.
