Idiocy in the school system example #3487Follow

Quote:
DENNIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A New Jersey second-grader's drawing of a stick figure shooting a gun has earned him a one-day school suspension.

Seven-year-old Kyle Walker's mom told an The Press newspaper of Atlantic City that her son was suspended for violating the district's zero-tolerance policy on guns. She said her son told her he'd drawn a water pistol.

Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child's parents complained about it to school officials.

The case is not the first in New Jersey in which students were suspended for depictions of weapons.

Four kindergarten boys were suspended in 2000 for playing cops and robbers, even though they were using their fingers as guns.

Wow thats a little much.

I am afraid to raise children in this Country, I'd hate to have to teach the kid to walk on eggshells at age 3.

I dunno about you, but when I was a kid, 90% of the pictures drawn by all kids my age were of guns. Wasn't it Nelson from Simpsons that drew a picture of a plane made of guns, shooting guns for bullets?

I really doubt a zero tolerance gun policy should cover hand drawn pictures of guns... that's just stupid. People are going to be afraid of being shot by a picture?

I remember when I was young drawing whole battles where you'd line up the armies on each side and then commence the fighting.

I've evaluated kids in on stuff like this. It's hard to tell people "Are you ******* serious?"

I told a kid once though "If you decide to blow up the school after this, I swear, I'll be pissed." And he laughed. And it was awesome.

When I was in the sixth grade, we had spelling and vocabulary words. We had to come up with a sentence for each of the words. We'd have about fifteen a week, I think.

I decided to write the goriest sentence I could for every word. My teacher actually commented on a few, "Good use of imagery," and "Very creative!"

Nowadays, I'd have been drug down to the counselor's office to talk about my feelings... Smiley: rolleyes

Wow... just wow...

There is no way in hell I would be able to get away with the kind of things I did as a kid. I can even see a few felony complaints in there too.

In eighth grade, I wrote a long epic story about a girl who fell in love with this guy that turned out to be gay after she went to a s and m bar called "Fists" and yet she still loved him and spent time repeatedly trying to have sex with him to no avail. They were accompanied by an alien lizard that was taken back to his homeplanet and returned as a green chicken and had to oppose this organization of **** retentive supervillains as the streets were paved in blood from their killings.

My teacher was all like "...um..what's up with this story?"

When are people going to learn that guns, like them or not, are intrinsic into American Culture?

Think about it, we are one of a few nations that were born with Guns, why is everyone so shocked that it has become part of our culture and also a symbol thereof?

Don't get me wrong I believe in gun control, but I also do not believe in this pansy induced coma that Dems are forcing upon Americans.

We are not a nation from the sword, we are a nation from the cannon, rifle, and pistol.

Would people in the UK throw a fit if swords were made illegal?

Your teacher was awesome. Smiley: laugh

If this crap is still going on by the time I have kids, I will seriously consider homeschooling them. How can I trust a school to teach my kids when the teachers and administrators lack the basics of common sense?

Alot of the zero tolerance stuff is coming from the right. It's different than the issues around gun control and conflating it loses the actual point around how to keep people safe.

Very true, however gun control is not one of them.

Allow me to elaborate, should someone be allowed to own a semi automatic assault rifle? Absolutely not, however I do not see the harm in owning say a shotgun, a hunting rifle, or revolver.

When my friend and I were freshmen in high school, we were in a Composition class and had to write a story. We collaborated, and wrote this story about two young women who find themselves being stalked by a psycho killer, so they run to an abandoned house. They ended up slaughtering the guy in a brutal fashion.

We ended the story by turning it into a suicide note, and said we were going to be throwing ourselves from the third floor balcony, as we couldn't live with what we had done.

We won first place. Smiley: grin

I don't think this is largely a political party problem. Regardless of where your party lines are drawn, you couldn't argue with gun locks, bans on automatic weapons and tighter restrictions of firearms in general.

The pussification of America is in the language and symbolism that people are getting in trouble over, which is largely based on a fear mongering that the Republicans use.

You are conflating two issues--gun control and zero tolerance in schools are different issues. Plus, I'm not sure if most democrats are against hunting rifles, etc which is another issue that is far different than having a personal handgun, imo.

I consider them linked.

If my child draws a picture of George Washing hailing into battle with a pistol in his hand, then that is as American as it gets.

It's the "ZOMG GUNZ R BAD" crowd that doesn't look at the cultural significance to guns and Americans.

I don't know if that is exactly the reason that people are introducing zero tolerance. It's linked in my mind to the desire to reintroduce the fears of the cold war--you don't know who your enemy is-- and people looked for an enemy. For a while it was the kids in school (which it is still apparently in some places) but switched on a national level to Middle Easterners.

I think the gov't likes people to be scared b/c they are easier to control and to basically perform acts that violate civil liberties like the patriot act.

Dispute my point? So much of this **** we've had, the random fears, finding an enemy is based on cold war ideology. If you studied history more you'd know what I meant.

I agree with this. Rifles, shotguns and hand guns (though not common) are what people own up north and we don't have the issues you guys do. At least, not to the extent you guys do.

Agree 100%. Fear = control. It's basic history. Read up on it.
